Harrislee: Hotels and Accommodation
Wassersleben is considered Germany’s westernmost Baltic Sea beach. The area offers more space for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as places to stop and rest and bicycle racks. There are public toilets and a beach shower on the beach. Wassersleben can be reached by bicycle and by bus routes 1 and 7.
Nature and Trails
The Niehuus Tunnel Valley in Harrislee is characterised by marshes, meadows and wet forests. The Krusau runs through it as a German-Danish border river and supports rare animal and plant species.
In the Schäferhaus Foundation Land, dry grasslands and nutrient-poor grassland areas alternate with dense shrubland and forest in a semi-open grazing landscape. A circular trail for hiking and cycling leads through the area. Historical traces along the route include Hörnerplatz, the silhouette of a wooden forest elephant and reconstructed burial mounds.
The recreational clearing features a barbecue hut, covered seating areas and exercise equipment adapted to the forest environment.
Border Region
The long-distance trails crossing Harrislee include the Ochsenweg, Gendarmenpfad, Grenzroute and Fördesteig. The remains of a small castle ruin can be seen on the Ochsenweg in Niehuus. The Grenzroute crosses the German-Danish border thirteen times, has forty information points with overview maps and passes many attractions.
Hiking and cycling tours around Harrislee run along the coast and through the green border region, with views of the Danish coast.
Culture
The Kupfermühle Industrial Museum presents regional industrial history in historic halls; a historic workers’ settlement can also still be visited. The Bürgerhaus in Harrislee is home to the Broschmann and Finke Theatre Company’s resident stage. The theatre company presents musicals, children’s theatre and its own show.
Local Highlights
Harrislee’s border shops offer Nordic products, including liquorice, fish specialities and Danish classics.
