Tammisaari / Ekenäs

The small town of Tammisaari (Swedish: Ekenäs) lies in southwest Finland on the Gulf of Finland, the easternmost part of the Baltic Sea, about 90 kilometres west of the Finnish capital, Helsinki. The town was founded in the 16th century, when Finland was part of Sweden. It is situated on a peninsula between two narrow sea bays and has a temperate climate. The town’s Swedish name refers to the oak trees found in Finnish forests only in the far southwest of the country. Since the beginning of the Russian period in 1809, Tammisaari has developed into a popular seaside resort, especially for the Russian upper class. Parts of the town and its surroundings remained occupied by Soviet troops until 1950.

The wooden houses in the town centre, in the Barckens udde district, were rebuilt after the town fire of 1821 and remain one of Tammisaari’s notable attractions. The town also has remains of a medieval fortification, begun in its early days but never completed. The remains of the former Raseborg Castle lie outside the town. From the town’s water tower, the view stretches far across the picturesque landscape of southern Finland’s archipelago.
