Mörrum between river, forest and coastal landscapes

Mörrum is a destination for anyone who wants to experience a river landscape actively and combine nature, sport fishing and culture. Laxaleden follows the Mörrumsån through forest, agricultural and coastal landscapes. The trail is more than 30 kilometres long in total; from Mörrums Kronolaxfiske, you can choose shorter and longer sections. This allows you to tailor your trip to different hiking plans without having to commit to a single trail length.

The Mörrumsåns nedre dalgång nature reserve offers good hiking opportunities. Laxaleden follows the river through the entire extent of the reserve between Mörrum and Svängsta; there are also several other trails. Oaks, beeches and pines dominate the forests. They are home to numerous fungi, lichens and mosses that occur in forests with high natural values and long-established deciduous or pine woodland. There are also traces and remains of cultural history: house foundations, stone walls, old roads, stone bridges, as well as facilities for fixed fishing, timber rafting, mills, sawmills and salmon farming.

Hiking with Different Trail Characteristics

For combining exercise with regional orientation, the section of Laxaleden between Svängsta and Mörrum is particularly suitable. It is approximately 12 kilometres long and works well as a point-to-point hike, as buses and trains can be combined. Some sections of Laxaleden are narrow, rocky and steep. Take these conditions into account when planning your day and choose the route according to the type of hike you want.

Mörrums Kulturslinga also provides a shorter introduction to the area's themes. The approximately 2-kilometre loop starts at Laxens Hus and explores Mörrum's history, fishing traditions and biological diversity. This allows you to include a more compact route with historical and natural-history content in your trip planning.

Sport Fishing and Laxens Hus

Since spring 1941, Mörrums Kronolaxfiske has been operated exclusively as a sport-fishing area. A personal fishing licence is required for fishing in the Mörrumsån. It is available from Mörrums Kronolaxfiske at Laxens Hus or online. Laxens Hus at Kungsforsen in the centre of Mörrum is the centre of sport fishing on the river. Mörrums Kronolaxfiske also offers fishing-equipment hire and guided fishing trips there.

Even without taking your own fishing trip, Laxens Hus provides an introduction to the history of the river. The exhibition follows the life of the salmon from the sea to the river. It also covers royal fishing in the Mörrumsån, which began in the early 13th century, as well as recreational fishing, which began here in 1941 under the fishery manager at the time, Gunnar Johansson. Most of the species found in the Mörrumsån can be seen in the aquarium.

History, Church and Getting There

Mörrums kyrka has medieval oldest building elements and acquired its neoclassical design during extensive alterations and extensions carried out from 1844 to 1847. Anyone wishing to include historic architecture alongside the river and hiking trails will find another distinct aspect of the area here. Laxfesten on 11 May includes a market, a fair and net pulling.

Mörrum can be reached by Öresundståg on the Malmö–Karlskrona route; disembark at Mörrum station. When looking for a hotel or other accommodation, you can therefore first decide what you want your trip to focus on: longer sections of Laxaleden, sport fishing on the Mörrumsån, the nature of the reserve, or the history and exhibitions around Laxens Hus. For further orientation, you can also include Svarvaremåla, Svängsta, Karlshamn, Asarum and Åryd in your selection.
