Sölvesborg: History, Nature and Paths by the Water

The medieval street network around Stortorget has been preserved in Sölvesborg. At the same time, Sölvesborgsviken is important for overwintering waterfowl as well as breeding wetland and reed birds. The Sölvesborgsviken nature reserve can be reached via Sölvesborgsbron and plays a role in outdoor recreation.

Nature and Water

Sölvesborgsbron is a 760-metre-long foot and cycle bridge over Sölvesborgsviken. It connects Sölvesborg city centre more closely with the Listerlandet peninsula. On the bridge, you can go for a walk, cycle, observe birds and the landscape, fish and have coffee.

Urban History and Culture

The S:t Nicolai Church is Sölvesborg’s only surviving medieval building. North of the church, traces of the Carmelite monastery founded in 1486 are visible. The ruins of Sölvesborg Castle date back to the 13th century; Sölvesborg Castle was the largest and most important medieval fortification in eastern Denmark.

Listers Härads Tingshus is an architectural monument in the Nordic Classicism style. Gunnar Asplund designed the building, which was constructed between 1917 and 1921. The Tingshus is open to visitors in summer; outside the summer season, guided tours can be booked.

The Borre Museum displays works by Bror “Borre” Carlström, a woodcarver, satirical artist and local character. Sölvesborg Museum is housed in a former grain and spirits warehouse from the first half of the 19th century and opened as a museum in 1982.

Killebom is Sölvesborg’s town festival and has been held since 1973. The Killebom Festival offers free guided walks and tours focusing on Sölvesborg’s town and culture; registration is not required.

Paths and Activities

Sölvesborgsleden is an approximately 8-kilometre-long hiking trail that passes several sights. It connects several nature reserves and recreational areas in the western part of Sölvesborg Municipality. The Cykelled Listerlandet cycle route begins in the town of Sölvesborg and passes several recreational areas and nature reserves; it is approximately 45 kilometres long.

A digital art tour leads through public art and architecture in Sölvesborg. The tree walk in central Sölvesborg uses a digital map to guide visitors to unusual trees. Elskåpskonst is Sölvesborg’s first walk-through street art exhibition.

Those arriving by train can reach the town centre directly via Sölvesborg railway station. Bus route 2 connects Sölvesborg railway station with Hörvik, Krokås, Nogersund and Hällevik.

Sports Activities

The Sölvesborg Flowtrail on Ryssberget is a 1.3-kilometre-long mountain bike track for children and adults, from beginners through to elite riders. The track includes jumps and curves. The Sölvesborg Pumptrack can be used with mountain bikes, BMX bikes, balance bikes, scooters, inline skates and skateboards.

At Grundsjön, you can fish for rainbow trout. Floating jetties are located around the lake, as well as an accessible jetty with a surrounding railing. The nine-hole course in Sölvesborg can be used as a pay-and-play course without a handicap card; equipment and balls can be rented.
