Discover Toholampi: the Lestijoki, bog trails and culture
Accommodation in Toholampi
If you want to plan your trip around river routes, bog landscapes and local history, there are several ways to discover Toholampi. There are also signposted trails through bog and marshland, as well as museums and historic buildings. Your plans and local distances are the main things to consider: some distances are considerable, while public transport options are limited.
On the Lestijoki: rowing and paddling routes
The rowing route on the Lestijoki begins at Lake Lestijärvi, passes through Toholampi and ends at the Gulf of Bothnia. The paddling route also begins at Lake Lestijärvi and passes through Toholampi. It is 102 km long, has a total elevation change of 120 m and 50 rapids, and also ends at the Gulf of Bothnia. Early summer is the best time for this paddling route.
Bog trails and nature experiences
The boardwalk to Paratiisisaari is one kilometre long, accessible and runs through a bog area to Kunnankämppä. If you are looking for a boardwalk through a bog landscape, this clearly marked route has a destination along the way. The boardwalks at Kopsanneva are part of a signposted nature trail. The trail is about 1.4 km long in total, with around 1 km of boardwalk. At one end there is a birdwatching tower, a lean-to shelter, a campfire site, seating for 50 people, a toilet and a woodshed.
To reach the Kopsanneva nature trail, the access road from the “Lintutorni” sign runs for about 1.4 km along a gravel road. The nature trail begins right by the road. This lets you take the approach and trail length into account separately when planning your visit. The signposted Erämaalatu ski trail network in Toholampi runs mostly through bog and open marshland. It offers another way to experience nature, this time along a network of ski trails.
In Sykäräinen, Murennuskosken laavu lean-to shelter is on the banks of the Lestijoki. It is accessible by car, with parking available, and a boardwalk leads to the riverbank. Information about access and the path to the water may be useful if you plan to visit this spot specifically.
Local history and regional culture
Toholampi Church was consecrated in 1861. It was designed by C. A. Zetterberg and built by Jaakko Kuorikoski. Pajamäki is a local heritage building dating from the 19th century and represents Toholampi’s traditional rural architectural style. The Pajamäki local heritage centre is open seasonally in summer; outside the summer season, visits can be arranged by appointment.
Häkkilä Local Museum is 4 km from central Toholampi, on the banks of the Lestijoki towards Kannus. Its collection presents the history of life in Toholampi from the Stone Age to the present day. Lainamakasiini was completed in autumn 1858 on Ruuttusenkallio. Today, it is located in the courtyard of the town hall at Lampintie 5 in Toholampi. Together, these places offer different points of interest for a visit, from everyday history to the town’s buildings.
More activities and getting around
Toholampi has two disc golf courses, each with 18 holes: one by the sports trail in the church village and one in Sykäräinen at Mörönpuro. You can borrow discs from Toholampi Library to use at the local courses. Intermunicipal bus services connect Toholampi with neighbouring municipalities such as Kannus and Kokkola; the main bus stop is in the town centre. If you plan to visit several destinations, take into account the considerable distances in some areas and the limited public transport options.
