Kolka on the Baltic Sea: Cape, Coastal Nature and Livonian Heritage

Cape Kolka

At Cape Kolka, the open Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga meet. Between water, dunes and pine paths lies a coastal landscape that can be experienced on foot, by bicycle and from the water. Kolka was one of the old Livonian fishing villages on the Baltic coast. Livonian heritage is therefore part of the history of the place. By the water, visitors can observe the landscape and explore paths through the coastal nature. The Kolka Lighthouse is a visible landmark at the cape. The connection between the two bodies of water defines the cape; as a result, the coast, water and landmark remain present from several perspectives.

Coastal Nature and Paths near Kolkasrags

A prominent natural feature is the Kolkasrags observation tower. The six-storey wooden tower has an upper observation platform 16 metres high. From there, the focus is on observing the landscape and birds. The tower complements the nature trail with an elevated view of the landscape and birds. The Kolkasrags Pine Trail provides access to nature over a shorter route. This nature trail is free, easy and 1.2 km long. Its short length and easy character make it an independent nature experience at the cape.

For active cyclists, the Slīteres Loop is a more extensive option. The cycle route near Kolkasrags is 50 km long and is intended for cyclists interested in the coastal nature and Livonian cultural heritage. At 50 km, the cycling route is considerably longer than the 1.2 km Pine Trail. The two options are therefore clearly different: the Pine Trail focuses on a short nature route, while the loop focuses on a considerably longer bicycle tour connected with coastal nature and Livonian cultural heritage. The short nature trail and the long cycling route thus represent different forms of getting around.

Kolkאsrags can also be experienced from the water. A roughly one-hour trip by fishing boat takes you around Kolkasrags or the Kolka Lighthouse. The boat trip thus offers a unique perspective of the cape and its landmark.

History, Churches and Fishing Tradition

The “Those Taken by the Sea” monument stands in the dunes near Kolkasrags. It forms a symbolic gate through which the new Kolka Lighthouse can be seen. The monument connects the dunes with the view of the lighthouse and adds a cultural accent to the coast.

In the village of Kolka, you can visit three churches: the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kolka, the Orthodox Church of the Nativity of Christ and the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady, Star of the Sea. The three churches belong to different ecclesiastical traditions and make the religious diversity of the village visible.

At Cape Kolka, visitors can try smoked fish prepared by local fishermen. This means that a specific culinary offering is also part of the local coastal culture.
