Apšuciems between the beach, nature and maritime culture

Apšuciems combines a seaside stay with protected nature and maritime culture. Anyone wishing to get to know a Baltic Sea resort not only through its bathing area, but also through its landscape, fishing history and local characteristics, will find several clearly distinguishable themes here. The coast, the bog, the Lāčupītes Trail, the cultural centre and the café each have their own focus.

Bathing area and practical information

Apšuciema pludmale is an unofficial bathing area in Apšuciems, in Engures pagasts. The bathing area has a few pieces of play equipment for children and a beach volleyball court. Other facilities include a small car park, a changing room, an information board and a toilet. Unlike the natural and cultural sites, the focus here is on spending time at the beach and on the specific facilities along the coast. The bathing area is unofficial; the natural sites, by contrast, are under special protection.

Protected nature between bog and flowering plants

Apšuciema zāļu purvs is a periodically flooded dune depression. A dune depression is a lower-lying formation within a dune landscape, situated between the surrounding dunes. This dune depression is home to four specially protected plant species characteristic of calcareous fens. The natural site thus combines a distinctive landform with protected plants, while the bathing area is the spatial focal point on the coast.

Apšuciema zāļu purvs is one of the 239 protected nature areas in the Natura 2000 network. Together with the dune depression and the four specially protected plant species, this protected-area status forms part of the bog’s natural profile.

Lāčupītes dendrārijs is a specially protected natural area between Apšuciems and Klapkalnciems on the seaside. Along the Lāčupītes Trail, many native and non-native flowering plants can be seen, especially in summer. Native plants originate from the region; non-native species originally come from elsewhere. While the bog is characterised by its dune depression, periodic flooding and protected plant species, plant observation along the Lāčupītes Trail focuses on the seasonally visible diversity of flowering plants. Thus, different landscape and plant features take centre stage at the two natural sites.

Maritime culture and local specialities

The “Zvejas un jūras kultūras mantojuma centrs” is housed in Apšuciems’ former school, directly by the sea. It presents an exhibition of historical objects about the everyday life of ancestors. It also offers various creative workshops and training sessions for exploring the sea and passing on fishing knowledge to future generations.

The “Apsīte” café is located very close to Apšuciema pludmale. The original Tukuma veltnītis with cherry sauce is available there. Alongside the bathing area, nature and maritime culture, a specific dish is therefore also one of Apšuciems’ local specialities.
