Vissenbjerg: Natural Forest, Hills and Culture

Those who want to combine distinctive landscapes and nature experiences with culture on their trip will find a diverse range of attractions in Vissenbjerg. The Vissenbjerg Hills are designated as an area of geological interest and include forests, lakes, springs, clay pits, pastures, viewpoints and gorges. The range of specific destinations therefore extends from nature and outdoor activities to wildlife and history.

Landscape between forests, marshes and gorges

A natural forest has been designated in Vissenbjerg Forest. The forest is left to develop naturally, promoting greater diversity among its plant and animal life. For nature-oriented trip planning, this area places a clear emphasis on forest development and wildlife.

The nature area near Vissenbjerg includes several grazed areas with calcareous fens. It is part of a protected forest and nature area of approximately 315 hectares south of Vissenbjerg.

The Udsigten viewpoint in the Vissenbjerg Hills is 129 metres above sea level and offers views of Brændholt Bjerg and Frøbjerg Bavnehøj. Another distinctive landscape feature is Afgrunden, a 400-metre-long and 16-metre-deep drainage gorge. Both destinations offer a tangible experience of the hills’ geological and topographical features, without requiring a specific type of route.

The Vissenbjerg Hills can be reached from Odense by FynBus; the bus journey takes less than half an hour. This connection can be taken into account when planning a regional trip if Vissenbjerg is being considered as a destination.

There is a combined fishing and viewing platform at Møllesøen near Vissenbjerg. It is located next to the car park and is easily accessible for wheelchair users.

History, figures and wildlife

The Koelbjergmanden & Istiden museum displays skeletal remains of the Koelbjerg Man, who lived 10,500 years ago during the Stone Age. It also features Stone Age objects found on Funen.

Sct. Vitus Kilde is a holy spring named after the Catholic Saint Vitus. Thomas Dambo’s work “Vissen Per og Bitten Røverdatter” is also located in Vissenbjerg and tells the story of two robbers from Vissenbjerg. The Bitten Røverdatter sculpture stands near the Vissenbjerg Idræts- & Kulturcenter. The Vissen Per sculpture stands in the part of the forest located north of Vissenbjerg’s main road, away from the actual forest area.

The Terrariet Reptile Zoo is a specialist zoo for reptiles and amphibians with one of the largest collections of exotic and endangered species in Scandinavia. During feedings, visitors can experience the animals at close range and listen to staff members providing information about them. The feeding sessions vary each day and complement the nature theme with an immediate animal-related experience.
