Faaborg: Art, urban history and paths by the fjord

Historic streets, the Langelinie waterfront promenade on Faaborg Fjord and views across the archipelago give Faaborg a distinct character shaped by urban history and water. This makes it a destination whose cultural sites, family-friendly trail sections, cycling routes and water sports activities appeal to a range of interests. The options therefore range from art and prison history to walks, cycling tours and activities on the water.

Culture and urban history

Faaborg Museum is a Gesamtkunstwerk combining painting, sculpture, architecture and furniture design. It is housed in an architectural gem dating from 1915 and is closely associated with the Funen painters. Den Gamle Gaard presents the cultural history of Faaborg and the surrounding area. At Den Gamle Gaard, the town’s role as Faaborg’s Købstadsmuseum can be traced back to 1932.

Arresten provides an authentic insight into prison life through its cells, courtyard and courtroom. The prison building and courtroom are part of Arresten’s permanent exhibition. With a rented iPad, visitors can solve the fictional mystery “Murder in the Jailhouse”, which takes place immediately after the Second World War.

Faaborg Klokketårn is a remnant of the town’s first church, Skt. Nikolaj Kirke. Its carillon has 38 bells and plays four times a day. Visitors can climb the 31-metre-high tower and enjoy views across Faaborg and the archipelago from the top. Faaborg Miniby presents Faaborg historically and to scale at a scale of 1:10, as the town looked in 1890.

Exploring Faaborg on foot and by bicycle

The Øhavsstien trail passes through the historic streets of Faaborg. The sections of the Øhavsstien in the Faaborg area are family-friendly and offer good places to rest along the way, as well as access to drinking water. For cycling tours, the Østersøruten follows the coast through Faaborg and Det Sydfynske Øhav, while the Herregürdsruten passes through Faaborg. When planning, you can choose between a route through historic streets, a coastal route and family-friendly sections.

For planning your day, the themes can be clearly separated: a walking tour can focus on the historic streets and museums, an active stage on the Øhavsstien or one of the two cycling routes, while these sports take centre stage on the water. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first decide on your preferred focus: culture, trails or water sports.

Fjord promenade and water sports

Along the Langelinie waterfront promenade, the path by Faaborg Fjord stretches from Havnebad to Klintenpark and the Klinten holiday centre. Faaborg Havnebad can be used for various water sports or as a starting point for them, including sea kayaking, open-water swimming, diving, water polo and kayak polo.

Guided tours through Faaborg can be booked all year round.
