Gislev: Landscape, Culture and Romanesque Church

Landscape around the Kongshøj Å Valley

The landscape around Gislev is characterised by rolling fields and open expanses. South of Gislev, the Kongshøj Å winds its way past the town, continues towards East Funen and eventually flows into the Great Belt. The Kongshøj Å tunnel valley system stretches from Gislev in the west via Frørup to the Great Belt in the east and is just over 15 km long. Along the Kongshøj Å, Holme Bæk, Sorteå and Fiskebæk, this system branches out. Large parts of the tunnel valley now consist of protected natural habitats; Gislev also has extensive recreational areas by the Kongshøj Å valley. The valley system’s length of just over 15 km gives it a broad geographical extent; protected natural habitats and extensive recreational areas shape different aspects of the same landscape.

Culture at Børneskoven

In Gislev Børneskov, Madpakkehuset is located at Ådalscenen KULTURCENTER Gislev. Ådalscenen is built from natural wood, and Ådalscenen Gislev Kulturcenter organises cultural activities in Gislev on and around the stage in Børneskoven. Ådalscenen has a stage and a picnic house arranged around an observation tower; the observation tower is part of a wind turbine tower. The cultural activities therefore take place in an environment characterised by woodland, natural wood and the distinctive tower structure.

Gislev Church and Its Frescoes

Gislev Church provides a different kind of focal point. It has a Romanesque chancel and a Romanesque nave and dates from the middle of the 12th century. Well-preserved frescoes adorn the ceiling of the chancel. Their motifs range from scenes from the New Testament, the Passion, the death and resurrection of Christ, through the story of Jesus’s childhood, to depictions of everyday life. Visiting Gislev Church is scheduled for between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.; services and certain excluded days may restrict access. The 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. time frame places a visit to the church within the daily schedule; services and certain excluded days remain possible restrictions.

Festival and Community Life

Events and community life complete the picture. The Gislev Musik Festival takes place every year on the first Saturday in June in Gislev Børneskov and has existed as a local association since 2001. Gislev Hallen can be booked by associations and private individuals; various association activities can be carried out there. The fixed date on the first Saturday in June makes the event a clearly scheduled point in the annual calendar.
