Open landscapes and trails through Svanninge

The open pastureland in Svanninge Bakker is being restored and provides a habitat for numerous plant and animal species. More than 125 species of grasses and herbs, as well as lichens, mosses and fungi, grow on Hestebakken. In addition, all five Danish reptile species can be found there. Svanninge Bjerge has many hiking trails through open areas and shady woodland. Svanninge provides access to Svanninge Bakker. The 2.5 km Svanningeruten trail passes through the village of Svanninge and combines movement through the landscape with a tour of the village. At 2.5 km, the Svanningeruten remains a manageable distance for planning a village walk through Svanninge.

Hiking and cycling between Bakker and Sø

The 220 km Øhavsstien long-distance trail passes through Svanninge Bakker and Svanninge Bjerge. For cyclists, there is a 5 km mountain-bike trail north of the car park at Restaurant Skovlyst in Svanninge Bakker. In addition, the blue cycle route runs from Svanninge to Arreskov Sø. The two cycling options also differ in their reference points: the mountain-bike trail is located by the car park of Restaurant Skovlyst, while the blue route leads to Arreskov Sø. Different trail lengths and landscape types allow you to organise your excursions according to your preferred focus.

Village character, church and early history

Svanninge has a well-preserved village character with half-timbered houses and groups of four-winged, thatched farmhouses. Cultural and historical attractions include Skjerninghøj, a well-preserved passage grave dating from around 3000 BC. Skjerninghøj is also one of the best-preserved passage graves on Funen. The half-timbered houses and farmhouses are therefore part of the village character through which the Svanningeruten passes.

Svanninge Church is a yellow church with a tall spire whose design was inspired by Austria. The central crucifixion scene in the altarpiece dates from the late 15th century and the Catholic period. Professor Hetsch designed the present appearance of Svanninge Church; when it was reconsecrated in 1838, it appeared as a cruciform church with a tall, shingle-covered spire.
