Tommerup: Discover Hiking Trails, Lakes and Culture

Tommerup combines an extensive network of hiking trails with the Tallerupsøerne lakes and specific cultural themes. Trails, lakes, church architecture, ceramics, bird parks and brickworks history offer different focal points for trip planning. The themes range from short routes by the lakes to architecture, craftsmanship and the rural past.

Hiking Trails and Lakes

The Tommerup hiking trail network opened in spring 1998. It comprises 16 routes totaling more than 100 kilometers and crosses the municipality in various directions. Tommerup Kirke is one of the network’s four starting points. A longer day of hiking can begin at Tommerup Kirke and continue along a section in the desired direction. For planning purposes, both the total length of the network and the specific starting point and direction are therefore relevant. The four starting points distribute access points throughout the network, while the routes cover different directions within the municipality.

At the Tallerupsøerne lakes near Fyrtårn Tommerup, an approximately 1-kilometer-long hiking trail leads around the three lakes. The loop is considerably more compact than the municipal trail network. For a shorter stay, it can be planned as an independent trail section; the larger network provides an extensive alternative. The two trail scales offer different bases for structuring the day within the hiking theme.

Church and Ceramic Tradition

Tommerup Kirke is a Romanesque church on Kirkebjerg in Tommerup. Its present appearance dates from 1920, when the tower was raised and fitted with blind arcades and stepped gables. For those interested in culture, the church offers an opportunity to view the Romanesque architectural form and the tower alterations of 1920 together.

The 5- to 6-meter-high ceramic jugs have been a trademark of Tommerup Keramiske Værksted for 30 years. The jugs complement the church architecture with a craft theme connected to Tommerup Keramiske Værksted. Thus, the architectural tradition is followed by a specific connection to the ceramics workshop.

Bird Parks and Rural History

Danmarks Fugle Zoo is home to more than 800 birds from approximately 150 species. Frydenlund Fuglepark has a 2-kilometer-long, largely accessible path through hilly terrain. Danmarks Fugle Zoo at Frydenlund Fuglepark also includes a small museum with old Danish agricultural equipment, providing insights into rural life in the past. When walking through Frydenlund Fuglepark, both the 2-kilometer length and the hilly terrain should be taken into account when planning the day. The bird population, the trail and the museum each provide their own focus within the bird park.

Brickworks and Clay Pit

Museet Lilleskov Teglværk is preserved and operated as a brickworks museum. In summer, the clay railway of Lilleskov Teglværk travels approximately 400 meters to the former clay pit. The former clay pit is the destination of the summer journey. For planning the day, the train ride can be considered a separate seasonal section with a length of approximately 400 meters. In addition to the museum itself, the former clay pit is therefore included as a specific destination of the journey.
