Kerteminde between Fjord, Beach and Viking Culture

Kerteminde North Beach has Blue Flag status. The sandy, gently sloping and child-friendly beach features a bathing jetty, a kiosk, mini golf, and beach volleyball and handball courts. Toilets are also available.

Nature and Coast

Kertinge Nor, also known as Kerteminde Fjord, covers 8.5 km² and stretches for just under 10 km from Kerteminde to its innermost point. Visitors can go cycling or kayaking along the fjord. The seal and harbour porpoise pools at Fjord&Bælt are a natural extension of Kerteminde Fjord.

Fjord&Bælt at Kerteminde harbour offers close-up encounters with harbour porpoises and grey seals. Every day at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and around 3:00 p.m., visitors can watch the training sessions of seals and harbour porpoises there and then ask the guides questions.

Romsø is an uninhabited island with beautiful nature and diverse wildlife. Ten kilometres of paths lead through the three forests of Holmeskov, Tværbæk Lund and Storskov in the Lundsgaard Skove area; the total forest area is 2.5 km². Sybergland offers public access, good paths, a fire and shelter site, freshwater meadows, and a newly established lake.

Paths and Water

Munkebostien is a 20-km-long, continuous hiking trail that surrounds Munkebo from Odense Fjord in the north to Kertinge Nor in the south. The Hindsholm Rundt cycling route is approximately 60 km long, gently undulating, and passes manor houses, burial mounds, and natural areas.

History and Culture

The Vikingemuseet Ladby features Denmark’s only authentic Viking ship burial, dating from 925. The Ladby King was buried in his warship in the grave. The collection of the Johannes Larsen Museet includes works by Johannes Larsen, Fritz Syberg, John Olsen and Christine Swane.

The Koldkrigsbunker Kerteminde is a completely original and fully operational historical time capsule covering just over 200 m², with its own emergency power and water supply. Its command centre housed the leadership of the civil emergency management service of Kerteminde Municipality.

Toldboden at Strandgade 3 is one of the oldest buildings in the town and was built in 1590 by the Odense merchant Niels Bager. Today, Toldboden serves as an exhibition venue for the Kerteminde Art Society and is also used for exhibitions by Østfyns Museer.

Kerteminde Church, also known as Skt. Laurentii Kirke, underwent extensive alterations in the 17th century. It contains a burial chapel belonging to the Iuel family and preserves objects from the time of the Swedish Wars. A settlement has been documented at Munkebo Bakke, a centre of power from the Late Iron Age and the Viking Age, dating from approximately 550 to 950 AD.

The Hindsholm Egnsmuseum provides insights into the history, culture and nature of the Hindsholm peninsula. Every year, Kerteminde hosts its Cherry Festival, which everyone is welcome to attend. The festival is rooted in the long-standing cherry-growing tradition in northeastern Funen.

Nordstranden is located in the vicinity of Kerteminde. Funen and Tornø are also located near Kerteminde, while Odinstårnet is in the immediate vicinity. Hellerup Church is also nearby. Nyborg Strand, Dallund Castle and Stjerneskansen are located in the wider regional area around Kerteminde.
