Langeland – Coastal Paths, Nature and History

Langeland combines expansive coastlines with a landscape whose forms reach far back into the past: the island has 152 kilometres of beaches. Langeland’s unique hat hills were formed during the last Ice Age, and the distinctive landscape has shaped the nature and culture of the region for more than 10,000 years.

Nature

Langeland is considered one of Denmark’s most bird-rich areas, particularly at the southern tip of the island. Gulstav Mose is a species-rich bird area; its main area is accessible with electric wheelchairs, manual wheelchairs and rollators.

At the northern tip of Langeland, the Hov Østerstrand nature reserve covers just over 2 hectares of pastureland, heath and beach and was designated a protected area in 1973. The forests of northern Langeland are Naturstyrelsen Fyn’s oldest and largest contiguous broadleaf forests; beech and oak trees dominate them.

The coastal forest edge in Vestre Stigtehave has had the status of an untouched forest since 1994. In Skovhaven near Hollænderhus, 47 different tree species found in Danish forests grow. The dog forest Vestrevænge near Lohals is considered Denmark’s oldest dog forest.

Langeland’s wild horses are Exmoor ponies. They move around year-round in fenced areas; their behaviour can be observed from a distance and in accordance with the animals’ welfare requirements.

Hiking and Paths

There are 29 proposed hiking routes on Langeland, ranging from 1 to 139 kilometres in length. Most are marked with pictograms on posts or signs.

The marked hiking route in Vestre Stigtehave is 3.5 kilometres long, while the marked hiking route in Mørkholm Skov measures 2.7 kilometres. An approximately 29-kilometre section of the Archipelago Trail runs from Lohals via Tranekær to Stengade Strand.

A coastal hike of around 139 kilometres around Langeland is one of the island’s longer hiking options. The forest paths with marked hiking trails in Vestre Stigtehave are suitable for wheelchair users.

Culture

The Langeland Museum displays well-preserved artefacts from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, as well as finds from the Renaissance fishing settlement of Sandhagen. Hollænderhus has an exhibition about the forests of northern Langeland.

Langelandsfort includes a maritime observation post and radar installations. Langelandsfort was built in 1952–1953 as part of Denmark’s defence of the sea route through the Great Belt during the Cold War.

The Cold War Museum Langelandsfort includes bunkers, guns and interactive exhibitions. It is designated as a monument of special cultural heritage value in the UNESCO Global Geopark region The South Funen Archipelago.

Tranekær Castle offers interior tours that tell the history of Tranekær and the Ahlefeldt family over many generations. TICKON in Tranekær displays Land Art by Danish and international artists made from natural materials that change over the course of the seasons. The installations at TICKON are designed to gradually decay and return to earth and stones.

Konabbe Skov is home to Langeland’s only ship setting, a prehistoric monument made of upright stones in the shape of a ship outline. The Medicinal Gardens in Tranekær contain more than 800 different medicinal plants and form the largest collection of medicinal plants in Northern Europe.
