Nyborg Municipality combines a distinctive coastal landscape with a medieval-influenced urban history. More than 45 km of coastline, a total of four Blue Flag beaches and numerous historic sites provide different starting points for planning your trip. Coast, Beaches and Water Sports

Nyborg offers various starting points for days at the beach. Fyns Badestrand is considered Funen’s widest sandy beach. Kongshøj Strand has a bathing jetty, a kiosk, parking facilities and Blue Flag status. In the waters of the Great Belt near Nyborg, diving is one of the available water sports. The maritime offering therefore ranges from classic beach time to more active engagement with the water, without requiring both interests to be pursued in the same place.

Medieval History in Nyborg

Nyborg Castle was built around 1200 by Valdemar Sejr. In 1282, Denmark’s first constitution was signed by Erik Klipping at Nyborg Castle. Nyborg Castle is currently closed to the public during ongoing restoration work. The Nyborg fortifications, including the castle island with its buildings, the castle lake and the ramparts, were registered as a protected monument in 1918.

Borgmestergården in Nyborg also combines architectural and urban history: the merchant’s house dates from 1601 and today houses the Nyborg City Museum. Its local history collection includes an exhibition about the Lerche family, an alchemist’s room, an activity involving quill and ink, and an old forge. The Nyborg School Museum also houses one of Denmark’s largest collections relating to the former schools in Nyborg and the surrounding area.

Every year, Nyborg Municipality and Østfyns Museer revive a historical tradition dating back more than 800 years: the medieval Danehof is re-enacted in Nyborg over a summer weekend. Free guided walks with volunteer guides also explore Nyborg’s old royal castle.

Walking Paths and Cycling Routes

Four different Kløversti routes are available for walks in Nyborg. The green Kløversti is 2.7 km long and leads through Nyborg’s historic town centre as well as the medieval royal and residential town. The black Kløversti is approximately 33.5 km long and runs through coastal areas, villages and the landscape around Nyborg. In addition, there are hiking and walking trails ranging from 0 to 5 km in Nyborg and East Funen, many of which combine nature and historic sites.

The surrounding area can also be experienced from different perspectives by bicycle. Nyborg’s cycling routes pass through coastal landscapes, forests and the atmosphere of a small-town merchant’s town. Nyborg can be reached by bicycle via national cycle route No. 8 and Route 6 across Funen. The varying route lengths allow you to choose between a short exploration of the town and nature and a longer tour through the countryside.
