Ballen: Beach, Harbour and the Øhavsstien Trail

Ballen is the place for you if you want the beach and harbour to be directly connected. Ballen Beach is located next to Ballen Harbour. Immediately behind the beach, there is parking at the harbour on an open grassy area. This creates a clear spatial sequence of waterfront, harbour area and open space. Harbour setting and connection to the water

The maritime character of Ballen can be seen in several clearly located facilities. Ballen Marina lies directly east of the mouth of the Syltemade Å. Ballen Åhavn is a well-preserved river harbour at the mouth of the Syltemade Å. The mouth therefore forms the spatial link between the marina and the river harbour. This is where maritime and historical local connections come together.

Valley, cliff and coastal forest

West of Ballen Harbour, the Syltemade Å flows through grazed meadows and natural areas. In the vicinity of Ballen, the Syltemade Valley is a 20-metre-deep erosion valley formed by meltwater. The southern half of the valley is protected and can be reached on foot from a car park on Langegyde road. West of the mouth of the Syltemade Valley near Ballen lies a small coastal cliff made of grey and brown moraine clay. The protected coastal forest of Præstens Skov is also located west of the mouth, and the Øhavsstien Trail runs through it. These landscape features give your stay a clear sequence of river, valley, coast and forest.

Walking the Øhavsstien Trail

The paths through the area around Ballen cater to different ways of walking. A marked 4.5-kilometre section of the Øhavsstien Trail runs through the Syltemade Valley. From Ballen Harbour, it is possible to take a walk along part of the Øhavsstien Trail through the Syltemae Valley. This allows you to distinguish between a marked section in the valley, a path through the coastal forest and a walk starting from Ballen Harbour.

Wreck diving near Ballen

Ballen's appeal extends beyond the shore. Wreck diving at the sunken Ærøsund ferry is possible from the coast near Ballen. Divers use the wreck of the M/F Ærøsund near Ballen Harbour as an artificial reef. For active travellers, the distinction between a coastal walk and a diving destination provides practical assistance when making plans.

A landscape with history

In Ballen, history is also closely connected with the landscape and its use. Ballen was first mentioned in 1551 under the name “Skerningballe”. The cultural landscape of Ø. Skerninge and Ballen was created through the agricultural reforms at the end of the 18th century. Its historical function as a shipping point adds a maritime aspect to this development.
