Thurø By: Coastal Paths, Nature and Church History
Thurø By combines paths along the water with a vivid local and church history. For your planning, you can choose between different focuses: Along the north coast, a path below the church leads towards Skårupøre Sund, while in the south, a path runs along Thurø Bund from Blåbyvej to the edge of the village at Gambøtvej. Public access along the water is secured on both the north and south coasts.
Church and Local History
Thurø By originally developed as a medieval village. Its settlement structure was formed by roads and shaped by the landscape. Thurø Church is a prominent historical landmark and is also known as “Trefoldighedskirken”. Construction began in 1639; on the third Sunday after Easter in 1640, the church was consecrated under this name.
At the cemetery of Thurø Church, the ground rises approximately 24 metres above the calm waters of Skårupsund. From there, views stretch across Funen’s wooded hills, fertile farmland, and the old forests surrounding the Bjørnemosegård estate. The cemetery’s winding paths lead down to the beach and the old vicar’s landing. There is also a memorial plaque commemorating 54 sailors from Thurø who have lost their lives at sea since 1900.
Thurø Rev and the Surrounding Forests
In the vicinity of Thurø By, Thurø Rev is protected as a habitat area. Salt-tolerant coastal meadow plants grow there, creating a distinct natural aspect of the coastal landscape. Fredskov near Grasten offers a different landscape impression: The woodland covers 45 hectares and consists of open beech forest as well as dense spruce forest. Coastal meadows and forests with varied structures thus stand alongside one another as specific nature experiences.
Cycling Route and Excursion Destinations
For active days, the 24-kilometre cycling route “Christiansminde and Thurø Round Trip” offers a clearly defined route option. It passes Smørmosen and Thurø Rev. In the vicinity of Thurø By, Smørmosen also offers mini golf on 20 handmade concrete lanes with obstacles. This allows you to choose between a longer cycling tour and a playful activity without losing sight of the area’s natural and historical attractions.
Getting Around the Village
Thurø By is separated from Svendborg’s Christiansminde district only by the causeway. In the centre of the village, there is a SPAR supermarket on Bergmannsvej. Nearby, Thurø Færgested recalls the former crossing between Funen and Thurø. Together with the paths along the north and south coasts, the church, and the destinations in the surrounding area, this creates an orientation in which local history, waterscapes, nature, and outdoor activities are closely connected.
