Bollnäs between the Iron Age, linen and nature
An unusual introduction to Bollnäs can be found right in the town: Onbacken preserves the remains of a complete Iron Age settlement dating from approximately AD 100 to 500. Information boards provide insights into life there and enable visitors to take a self-guided tour of the Iron Age remains.
The Bollnäs destination area includes the localities of Bollnäs, Vallsta, Hanebo, Segersta and Rengsjö.
Culture
Bollnäs Church was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. Apart from Vadstena Abbey Church, it contains Sweden’s largest collection of medieval church sculptures.
In Växbo, Trolldalen preserves one of the best-preserved environments from the heyday of flax processing. In summer, guided tours of the preserved flax drying house are offered there; Trolldalen is open at all times.
Växbo Lin is one of the few remaining linen weavers in Sweden. Visitors can see ongoing linen production with numerous mechanical looms. Guided factory tours demonstrate the process from raw material to finished product.
Landabanan offers train rides in summer with kolbullar, coffee service and music. Bollnästravet stages around 40 trotting races per year. Another historical facet is presented by Bollnäs Folkets Park on Långnäs udde, which dates back to the 1920s. Events featuring local and visiting artists take place there in summer.
Bollnäs museum och konsthall is a centrally located art gallery with changing exhibitions throughout the year. Bollnäs museum presents the history of the town. The Bollnäsbarnen exhibition explores the lives of children and young people in Bollnäs around the turn of the 20th century.
Nature
The Stora and Lilla Bolleberget area has a well-developed network of trails and tracks for hiking, running and cycling, ranging from 1 to 17 km in length.
The Tjuvberget Nature Reserve is located nearby, south of Bollnäs, by Lake Övre Herten. From the Tjuvberget car park, a winding path of approximately 750 m leads to the summit. The Hälsingeleden trail passes the southern part of the nature reserve; there is a fire pit and firewood there.
Finnskogsriket is a natural and cultural area between Hälsingland, Gästrikland and Dalarna. The area has around 2,170 km of snowmobile and hiking trails, some of which are also suitable for bicycles.
The Galvån Nature Reserve is particularly valuable for its diverse birdlife and its population of trout. An easy trail follows the Galvån River between Galvsjön and Nyfors.
Water and transport
Aboard the S/S Warpen steamship, visitors can experience Bollnäs and the Ljusnan Valley from the water. All trips depart from the quay by the marina in Långnäs.
At Sävstaås IP in Bollnäs, canoes can be rented and transported independently to a destination of your choice. Canoes are rented at Prästnäset on Lake Voxsjön.
Bollnäs has four local bus routes that run twice an hour during the daytime on weekdays.
