Hudiksvall: Urban History by the Water and Paths Through the Greenery

Culture and History in Hudiksvall

Hälsinglands Museum in Hudiksvall is a cultural arena for exhibitions, talks, concerts and guided tours. This means its offering goes beyond a mere collection and provides various opportunities to engage with culture and regional history.

One particularly distinctive historic building is Jakobskyrkan. It is the oldest building in the town; its foundation stones date from 1643, and the present-day church was consecrated in 1672. Its role in the town’s history is also exceptional: It escaped the Russian destruction of Hudiksvall in 1721 and was largely the only building left standing in the town after it was burned down.

Fiskarstan is one of the best-preserved areas of Hudiksvall. Together with Jakobskyrkan, it forms a historic focal point where preserved urban structures and a single building with a distinctive past come together. Another local trace leads to Fagerströms karamellfabrik, founded by Emma Fagerström in 1922.

Waterfront Paths and Nature Experiences

Lillfjärden is located in the centre of Hudiksvall. Its shoreline is approximately 2.2 kilometres long and is a popular route for walking and jogging. Fishing is also permitted in Lillfjärden in accordance with the applicable fishing regulations.

The waterfront promenade offers opportunities for walks and bike rides from Kattvikskajen via Västra hamnen to Håstaholmen.

Galgberget has an approximately 2.1-kilometre walking trail marked in orange. At around 2.1 kilometres, it is a similar length to the approximately 2.2-kilometre shoreline of Lillfjärden. On its southern side, traces of quarries and associated transport routes have been preserved. The landscape also changes noticeably there: a north-facing slope dominated by spruce, a rocky pine forest on the summit and a sunlit pine forest on the southern side form different woodland types. These areas have very high natural values.
