Norrsundet: Coastal Culture between Fishing Village and Industrial Museum

Norrsundet is a coastal industrial settlement that emerged around a sawmill and a sulphate factory at the turn of the 20th century. The origins of the town therefore lie in the connection between the coast and industry. The present-day townscape includes a small-scale fishing settlement, a seaside swimming area, rocky outcrops and the open sea. Industrial history, its waterside location and the coastal landscape are not separate from one another here, but shape different aspects of the same place.

Coastal and Industrial History on Site

Ådala Bruksmuseum is open year-round every Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Norrsundets Arbetarmuseum is located in Ådala’s old school building from 1897. The exhibitions show life in the 1910s, 1920s and 1950s. Thus, Ådala brings together a historic school building and several perspectives from different periods on life in Norrsundet. The museums lead from the town’s industrial origins to the everyday worlds of different decades.

Kastellet is Norrsundet’s oldest surviving building. It was originally an engine house that was converted around the turn of the 20th century. Today, Kastellet is used as a small industrial museum. The buildings at Kastellet are distinctive and valuable from a cultural and historical perspective. The change from engine house to museum connects the building’s original technical function with its present-day use. Kastellet therefore presents not only a single historic building, but also a part of Norrsundet’s industrial history.

In the heart of Norrsundet lies Kulturhuset Fyren, a cultural centre with a wide range of activities. It complements the museums and Kastellet with a cultural venue that is part of present-day life in the town. Bergmans Fisk sells fresh, frozen and processed fish. The local offering thus ranges from culturally and historically significant buildings and exhibitions to a shop whose range is entirely focused on fish.

Fishing Settlement, Seaside Swimming Area and Coastal Trail

Saltharsfjärden is a small-scale, picturesque fishing settlement with boathouses and fishermen’s sheds by the water. The settlement is within easy walking distance of the centre of Norrsundet. The Saltharsfjärden seaside swimming area is located in the immediate vicinity. Here, boathouses, fishermen’s sheds and the seaside swimming area form part of a coastal landscape in which the use of the water and the buildings along the shore stand closely alongside one another.

The walking trail on Skatudden passes the rocky outcrops at Slätvik and continues to viewpoints over Lillgrund and the open sea. There, the coast is not defined by a settlement with boathouses and sheds, but by the interplay of rocky outcrops, trail and expansive views of the sea. Saltharsfjärden and Skatudden thus show two different sides of the Norrsundet coast: here, the small-scale shoreline landscape; there, the open view across the sea.

Nature Southeast of Norrsundet

Six kilometres southeast of Norrsundet lies the Marsjön-Bondsundet Nature Reserve. It encompasses aquatic habitats and valuable wetlands, as well as natural-looking forests with a high proportion of deciduous trees. The reserve therefore includes both water-dominated areas and forest areas. Compared with Norrsundet’s developed coast, the focus here is on wetlands, aquatic habitats and natural-looking forests.
