Skålsjö: Trails through Alfta Finnskog
Accommodation in Skålsjö
Skålsjö combines a long-established cultural landscape with trails through pine heaths and seasonal winter activities. When planning your visit, the focus is on a range of trail lengths, landscape features and historical sites. This lets you decide whether, on your trip, you would like to focus mainly on hiking, learning about Finnskog history or enjoying a winter activity.
Hiking trails and distances
The Eggaspåret hiking trail starts at Skålsjögården in Alfta Finnskog. It can be divided into routes of 7.5, 10, 15, 22 and 30 kilometres. The options range from a relatively short to a considerably longer distance, so you can plan your hike around the distance you want to cover.
Familjespåret and Fäbodslingan also offer different ways to experience the area. Familjespåret runs mostly through gently rolling pine heath and is wide. In spring and autumn, it can be used for hiking and mountain biking; in winter, cross-country ski tracks are prepared there. Winter conditions can vary.
Fäbodslingan runs through pine heaths and past the two summer farms, Hibovallen and Brattskuru. It is intended for hiking, running and mountain biking, as well as skiing in winter. While Familjespåret is described primarily in terms of its wide trail and gently rolling landscape, the pine heaths and two summer farms shape the character of Fäbodslingan.
Finnish farmsteads and historic trails
The Skålsjön cultural heritage area consists of three former Finnish settler farmsteads: Tulpans, Mickels and Stampen. They were established between the mid-19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. North of Lake Skålsjön, the farmsteads of Mickels, Tulpans and Stampen form a small village-like setting that retains the character of the mid-19th century. Tulpans is one of these three farmsteads in the village of Skålsjön in Alfta Finnskog.
The area’s history also includes a prehistoric transport and pilgrim route. It ran from Dalarna to Trondheim, passing through Hälsingland and Skålsjön. This historic connection adds another perspective to a visit, alongside the hiking and winter sports described here: the cultural landscape can be viewed through both its farmsteads and its former role as a passageway.
Nature and winter experiences
Brattskure is an old summer-farm area with distinctive natural surroundings. One notable natural feature is Brattskuretallen: its circumference is almost 350 centimetres, and it is believed to be the thickest pine in Hälsingland.
In winter, Skålsjögården offers snowmobile tours, cross-country skiing, husky tours and snowshoe hikes through snow-covered natural surroundings. If you would like to include one of these activities in your travel plans, check availability before you arrive. The nearest railway station to Skålsjögården Timber Lodge is in Bollnäs; a transfer is offered and must be arranged in advance. This means you can account for travelling by train and taking a transfer as a separate step in your planning.
The options in the area range from hikes of varying lengths through pine heath and historic farmsteads to seasonal winter activities. You can decide which side of Skålsjö will shape your trip based on your preferred activity and the time of year.
