Forest trails, waterways and culture in Strömsbruk

Strömsbruk combines short routes through forest and heathland with extensive waterways and a history that dates back to a former ironworks. If you would like to divide your trip between activities, nature observation and regional culture, you will find several clearly distinct points of interest here: a 2.5-kilometre loop, a roughly 60-kilometre canoe trail, the cultural and historical landscapes of Holm and Orn, and events connected with Jussi Björling.

A loop through pine heathland and spruce forest

The Strömsbruk illuminated trail is a 2.5-kilometre loop suitable for walking and cross-country skiing. The trail passes through pine heathland and spruce forest. As a result, open heathland and more densely wooded sections alternate along a manageable route. About halfway around, there is a shelter directly beside the trail. You can eat any food you have brought with you there. For planning your day, the loop can therefore be treated as a short activity in its own right, without combining it with the longer water route.

The Nordanstig Canoe Trail

The Nordanstig Canoe Trail offers more scope for a tour on the water. It is approximately 60 kilometres long in total and leads to Strömsbruk and the coast. The route passes through large and small lakes, narrow rivers and several navigable rapids. It also includes around 15 portage points or sections where boats must be transported over land. The route therefore consists not only of continuous stretches of water, but also of sections where portaging or overland transport is required. This distinction is important if you want to explore a waterscape with different types of waterways and land passages.

Holm: Cultural heritage site, lakes and biodiversity

Holm is an area in Strömsbruk designated as a cultural and historical monument. It surrounds the Holmsjöarna lakes and extends from the head of the rapids at Holmströmmen to the first rapids at Strömsbruk. These rapids are now below the regulated water level. Holm also contains the remains of buildings from the former Holm farm. The landscape is characterised by great biodiversity, with many rare species in its flora and fauna, as well as abundant birdlife. Holm thus combines historical traces with an area whose natural features are explicitly among its defining characteristics.

Orn and the route to the Gulf of Bothnia

Orn forms another landscape corridor. The area extends from Strömsbruk along the Harmångersån River to its mouth in the Gulf of Bothnia. At the outer end lies the long shingle sandbank Ornskarpen. Orn offers opportunities for trout fishing, as well as rich riverside flora and birdlife. In contrast to the forest trails of the illuminated trail and the lakes and rivers of the Nordanstig Canoe Trail, the focus here is on the course of a river all the way to the coast.

Ironworks, Jussi Björling and regional connections

Strömsbruk developed around an ironworks that operated from 1672 to 1889. The connection to music history is also specific: Jussi Björling’s paternal ancestors came from Strömsbruk. In Strömshall, the Jussi Björling Society organises Jussifesten every year. The town’s history thus brings together an industrial past, a famous family heritage and a regularly held cultural event.
