När: Lighthouse, Churches and Nature Trails

Choosing När as a travel destination means combining a flat coastal landscape with distinctive cultural monuments and various paths through nature. Particularly characteristic is Närsholmen: The low-lying, flat peninsula consists partly of beach gravel ridges and is characterized by a juniper savanna. Thus, it is not an urban setting but rather the interplay of open landscape, coast, and historic landmarks that takes center stage.

Lighthouse and church architecture as historical reference points

An important destination for visitors interested in culture is Närs fyrplats. The lighthouse was built in 1872. The 19th-century complex is very well preserved and has been a state-listed historic building since 2008. Its historical character can therefore be understood through a specific structure, without limiting När’s landscape to a single attraction. The year also clearly places the lighthouse within the area’s more recent history.

När Church also adds a significantly older architectural history to this picture. Its tower was supplemented around the middle of the 13th century with a clearly recognizable defensive function. Around 1300, the Romanesque choir and nave were replaced by corresponding elements in the Gothic style. Those interested in medieval ecclesiastical architecture will therefore find several clearly distinguishable stages of development in one building. The tower, choir, and nave represent different construction phases from the 13th to the beginning of the 14th century.

Nature and cultural trails around När

Linnéstigen is a 5.5-kilometer nature and cultural trail following in the footsteps of Carl Linnaeus. Its starting point is at the Sockenmagasin by När Church; parking is also available there. The combination of the route, nature, and cultural themes makes the trail an independent way to explore När. At the starting point, the trailhead, church, and parking are therefore located at one specific landmark. Another hike leads between När Church and Lau Church. It is 4 kilometers long and partly follows Linnéstigen.

If you prefer a longer circuit through the landscape, Närsakarleden offers a different type of route. The circular trail is approximately 11 kilometers long and follows both sides of the Närsån. From the grandstand at Närsakarscenen, Närsakarleden offers views over the river mouth, Lausviken, and as far as Lausholmar. There are also two birdwatching towers on both sides of the mouth of the Närsån where it meets the sea in Lausviken. The trails therefore differ not only in length but also in their relationship to the landscape: Linnéstigen combines nature and culture, while Närsakarleden incorporates the river mouth and the views across Lausviken. The route options thus range from a 4-kilometer section between two churches, via the 5.5-kilometer Linnéstigen, to the approximately 11-kilometer circular trail.
