Stenkyrka: Coastal Cliffs, Rauks and Cultural History
Stenkyrka combines a striking coastal landscape with traces of cultural history and a variety of trails. When planning your trip, you can choose between different experiences: visit an unusual prehistoric monument, explore the steep cliffs in the area and the Jungfrun Rauk, or follow a section of the Klintkustleden trail. The Stenkyrka Local Heritage Museum and the fitness trail near Gardestugan also offer experiences of their own.
Cultural history between Hjulkorsgraven and the museum
Stenkyrka Hjulkorsgraven dates from approximately AD 300 to 400 and has a diameter of 17 metres. The monument is visible from the road and easily accessible from the car park. It can therefore be treated as a separate short sightseeing stop when exploring the area around Stenkyrka, without requiring a longer hike.
The Bullada at the Stenkyrka Local Heritage Museum offers another perspective on the area's history. Agricultural machinery is housed there, while the upper floor contains a collection of old objects. The two levels therefore differ clearly: the lower floor focuses on agricultural machinery, while the upper floor houses a collection of old objects.
Cliffs, nature reserves and the Jungfrun Rauk
In the area around Stenkyrka, the Törrvesklint Nature Reserve includes a 1.3-kilometre section of coastal cliff north of Stenkyrkehuk. The Jungfrun Nature Reserve is also nearby, with a 700-metre section of steep coastal cliff northwest of Lickershamn. The two protected coastal sections therefore differ both in their stated length and in their location.
The Jungfrun Rauk is one of the area's distinctive natural formations. In the vicinity of Stenkyrka, it is Gotland's highest rauk; its summit is 26 metres above sea level.
Hiking on the Klintkustleden
In the area around Stenkyrka, the Klintkustleden leads from Törrvesklint through the Jungfrun Nature Reserve down to Lickershamn. For a specific route choice, the Lickershamn–Ireviken section is also worth considering: it is 6.1 kilometres long and takes approximately two hours. There is a challenging ascent in the northern part of Lickershamn Bay; otherwise, the section is easy to manage. This distinction is important if you are looking for a coastal hike that is mostly easy, but can plan for one more demanding ascent.
Stenkyrka also has an area with a fitness trail near Gardestugan. This shorter exercise option complements the longer coastal route, without implying that the two experiences are the same.
Special nature experiences throughout the year
In the Törrvesklint Nature Reserve, streams and small waterfalls form in the area around Stenkyrka in spring and autumn when sufficient water is available. This detail makes the season and the prevailing water conditions relevant to how the landscape is experienced. Stenkyrka is therefore suitable as a destination for anyone who wants to consider coastal cliffs, geological formations, natural areas and historical remains together when planning a trip.
