Ala: Lagan, the Lagaleden Trail and Historical Traces
The Lagan between the power station in Laholm and its mouth at the sea is known for salmon fishing. The Lagaleden Trail offers opportunities for canoeing; canoes can be rented at Hjörnered. Boat tours take place on the Lagan. Nedre Ala adds settlement history and Bronze Age traces to the connection with the water. Laholm and its surroundings also offer cultural attractions.
Historical Traces in Laholm and Nedre Ala
Nedre Ala comprises a residential building dating from around 1890 on a former agricultural estate, as well as two Bronze Age burial mounds. The site thus combines a building from the late 19th century with much older traces of the landscape's history. If you are interested in historical sites, the ruins of Lagaholm Castle are also one of the notable destinations: they are located in the centre of Laholm, directly next to the power station on the Lagan River. Lagaholm Castle was built in the 13th century; today, only the castle ruins remain.
In Laholm, the Teckningsmuseet adds a distinctive cultural accent. It is the only museum of drawing art in the Nordic countries. The Lagafountains, Laholm's oldest and largest public work of art, are located on Stortorget. Another precisely dated building is S:t Clemens Church: it was built in 1225, and its tower dates from 1632. Together with Nedre Ala and Lagaholm, these sites form a selection of historical and cultural points of interest spanning the period from the Middle Ages to more recent local history.
The Lagan, the Lagaleden Trail and Water Experiences
The Lagan between the power station in Laholm and its mouth at the sea is considered one of Sweden's best salmon-fishing waters based on the number of fish landed. This classification explicitly refers to the number of fish landed. For canoeing, the Lagaleden describes a considerably longer route: the trail runs for 150 kilometres from Lake Bolmen in Småland to the sea in Laholmsbukten. Canoe rental is available along the entire route.
At Hjörnered, the Lagan connects with the artificial lake system Hjörneredssjöarna. Canoes can be rented there. The Laholms Ångbåtsförening offers another perspective on the river: in summer, it organises boat tours on the Lagan aboard the steamship S/S Lagaholm.
