Ã…skloster between Klosterfjorden, Cultural Heritage and Coastal Landscape
Ã…skloster between Coast, History and Active Experiences
Åskloster offers several distinctly different reasons to choose it as a travel destination: at the Viskan’s outlet into the sea, the Klosterfjordens Golf Club course has a seaside character, while Åsklosters kungsgård and the remains of Ås Monastery bring the area’s history to life. In addition, the Årnäshalvön nature reserve preserves a remnant of the old coastal heathland landscape.
Åsklosters kungsgård and the Traces of Ås Monastery
The historic heart of Åskloster lies at Åsklosters kungsgård. The present main building was constructed in stone in 1806–1807, based on Carl Hårleman’s standard drawings for royal estates. The building’s history can be traced further through the wings: the west wing was built in 1847, while the east wing dates from the 1860s. Åsklosters kungsgård has been protected as a listed building since 1993.
The site contains the ruins of the first monastery in Halland. It was founded by Cistercians in the 1190s. In front of the main building are excavated remains of Ås Monastery and its church. The former size of the monastery’s estate is also part of the area’s history: at the height of its development around 250 farms in northern Halland belonged to it. Thus, Åskloster draws attention not only to a single building, but to a historic ensemble with surviving architectural, archaeological and landscape traces.
Golf and Kayaking at the Viskan Estuary
For active days, Klosterfjordens Golf Club offers a nine-hole course with 18 alternative tees. Its seaside character comes from its location at the Viskan’s outlet into the sea. The golf course is therefore a distinct focus for travel planning, while the waterscape around the Viskan offers another way to experience Åskloster.
A 2–2.5-hour kayaking route leads from Kullagården outside Veddige to the sea. There, the Viskan flows into Klosterfjorden north of Åskloster. For this kayaking route, kayaks, life jackets, paddles and spray skirts are included in the price. There is also a Kayakomat at the Viskan estuary north of Åskloster. The documented route and specific equipment information make the waterways a clearly defined experience for visitors who want to discover Åskloster through more than its architectural history.
Coastal Nature as Another Focus
The Årnäshalvön nature reserve preserves a remnant of the old coastal heathland landscape. Together with the Viskan’s outlet to the sea, it creates a distinctive landscape feature alongside the historic sites and golf course. You can therefore choose how to view Åskloster according to your interests: as a place of historical landmarks, golf and kayaking, or a remaining coastal landscape.
