Falkenberg between the Old Town, Ätran and the Coast

Falkenberg combines historic buildings with walking and cycling paths along the Ätran, as well as a varied coastal landscape in the surrounding area. If you would like to choose between culture, riverside paths, cycling and beaches during your stay, the town offers several clearly distinct points of interest: medieval and modern history, promenades through different landscapes and the nearby Grimsholmen Nature Reserve.

Historic Sites in Falkenberg

A particularly distinctive starting point for exploring the town’s history is S:t Laurentii Church. It is Falkenberg’s oldest building, was constructed around 1300 and is also regarded as Falkenberg’s only surviving medieval building. The ruins of the defensive castle Borgen Falkenberg are located at the eastern end of Tullbron. The castle was built towards the end of the 13th century as an outpost of the Danish monarchy.

Tullbron itself is also part of Falkenberg’s historical landmarks. It was built between 1756 and 1761 and has been protected as a listed building since 1984. Falkenberg Church provides a later architectural accent: the Neo-Gothic church was designed by Adrian C. Peterson and inaugurated on 14 October 1892. Rian presents temporary exhibitions; the institution also manages cultural-historical collections and environments.

Falkenbergs Hembygdsmuseum documents the town’s history from antiquity to the early 20th century. It is housed in a well-preserved building in the Old Town and has a museum garden. This allows a museum visit to be combined with views of historic buildings, without reducing the town’s history to a single building.

Promenades along the Ätran and to the Beach

Falkenberg offers several different routes along the water. Laxpromenaden is a walking and cycling path along the Ätran through a scenic area. Doktorspromenaden also follows the Ätran, is two kilometres long and was completed in 1861. Those wishing to combine the riverside with a visit to the beach can use Strandpromenaden: on foot, it connects Falkenberg’s centre with Skrea Beach in about half an hour.

Grimsholmen and the Kattegattleden

The Grimsholmen Nature Reserve is located near Falkenberg. The landscape there is characterised by open coastal heathland, botanically interesting beach meadows and areas covered with boulders. The area also includes small sandy beaches suitable for swimming. The Kattegattleden passes the Grimsholmen Nature Reserve and its car park; the car park is served by the “Grimsholmen Broberg” bus stop.

The Kattegattleden is a national cycle route that runs through the whole of Halland. The section in Falkenberg is varied. Overall, the route between Gothenburg and Helsingborg is 39 miles long, runs mostly close to the coast and is free of motor traffic. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore connect historic sightseeing in the town, paths along the Ätran and a coastal cycling tour in your mind, without these experiences having the same character.
