Kungsbacka between Fjord, Nature and History

Kungsbacka opens onto an island and skerry landscape in the Kungsbackafjorden Nature Reserve: around fifty islands and skerries belong to it. Over the years, more than 240 bird species have been observed there. The nature reserve offers swimming and fishing; its islands can be reached by boat.

Nature and Coast

The nearby Naturum Fjärås Bräcka offers exhibitions, activities and a café. Fjärås Bräcka itself is a glacial marginal formation that rises 60 metres above the Halland coastal plain. In the nearby Näsbokrok Nature Reserve, a 1.4-kilometre circular trail runs past several rest areas.

Särö Västerskog has two marked circular trails, 1.4 kilometres and 3 kilometres long respectively. In the area, you can swim at a sandy beach, from cliffs and among boulders. Rare sand lizards, smooth snakes and pearl-bordered fritillaries live there. On Vallda Sandö, you can observe birds and flowers, and swimming is also possible. The island has gently sloping sandy beaches and rocks suitable for swimming. Many paths and trails are used for walking there, but there are no marked hiking trails.

Culture and History

The nearby Tjolöholms slott lies on a peninsula in the Kungsbackafjord and is a cultural-historical setting unique in Sweden. Nearby Tjolöholm has seven kilometres of carefully paved paths that pass old oaks, coastal meadows, viewpoints, rocky beaches and deciduous forests. The nearby Tjolöholms slott can be reached from Kungsbacka by bus 732 towards Frillesås, followed by an approximately 3.5-kilometre walk from the Torpa Smedja stop.

In the area around the present-day church of Tölö are archaeological remains of a stave church from the 11th century. This area developed into an important economic and politico-religious centre in the early 11th century. Kungsbacka city centre has historic wooden houses and small cobbled streets.

Kunsthalle Kungsbacka presents exhibitions by international, national and local artists, with a focus on contemporary art; admission to all exhibitions is free. The city centre also has a self-guided tour of public art featuring sculptures and artworks.

The nearby Li burial ground near Fjärås Bräcka is the largest Iron Age burial ground in Halland. It comprises more than one hundred standing stones and around forty other remains. Nearby Äskhult has four historic trails with colour-coded main routes and stops at sites of historical or biological value.

Hunehals Borg was a medieval castle located outside Kungsbacka in the 12th and 13th centuries. At Hunehals Borg, a self-guided cultural trail with information boards leads through the former castle grounds.

Getting Around

The Kattegattleden starts at Kungsbacka torg and follows the Kungsbackafjord towards Onsalahalvön. The Hallandsleden Kusten passes through Kungsbacka in four stages through forests, urban areas, countryside and coastal areas.

Kungsbacka Teater is just a few minutes’ walk from Kungsbacka Resecentrum; a bus also stops at the Teatergatan stop. Kungsbacka Klättercenter offers bouldering, courses and bookable activities for groups. Forsgårdens Golfklubb has an open 27-hole parkland course with a seaside character.
