Olofsbo: Beach, Nature and Coastal Culture on the Kattegat

Olofsbo combines a long sandy beach with nature observation, maritime history and distinctive cultural sites. When choosing your accommodation, you can primarily shape your stay around whether you want to focus on beach days, birdwatching, cycling tours or historic coastal destinations.

Beach and cycle path on the Kattegat

Olofsbo Beach is a long, child-friendly sandy beach with shallow bathing water. On the Falkenberg–Varberg section of the Kattegattleden, Olofsbo is one of the bathing beaches along the coast.

Here, the Kattegattleden is the designated cycle route section between Falkenberg and Varberg. A Halland farmstead is a farm complex enclosed by buildings; Staffens is protected as a listed building and has one of Sweden’s largest thatched roofs. Morups tånge, as a nature reserve, is a destination for birdwatching with a seasonal focus in late summer and autumn. The Morups Tånge lighthouse adds a maritime structure to the area’s history.

For cyclists, the route to the Morups tånge nature reserve is described precisely: 1 km north of Olofsbo, they turn off the Kattegattleden and follow the signs for another 1.5 km to the protected area. Morups tånge is a place for birdwatching. In late summer and autumn, most Swedish wader species can be seen there. This seasonal feature complements a day at the beach with a nature experience of a different kind.

Lighthouse, farm and local history

The Morups Tånge lighthouse defines Olofsbo’s maritime character. It was built in 1841, is 27 metres high, still casts its light across the Kattegat and has been unmanned since 1962. The lighthouse thus represents a long coastal history, without any specific present-day access option being inferred from this.

Another historic destination is Staffens, Olofsbo’s local heritage and farm museum. The well-preserved Halland farmstead, enclosed by buildings, has one of Sweden’s largest thatched roofs and is protected as a listed building. Visits are possible on set dates: Staffens holds an open day on the first Sunday in July every year and also opens during the Ekomuseum days on the first weekend in August.

The area’s more recent leisure history is also part of its character. The skateboard park in Olofsbo is one of the world’s oldest surviving skateboard parks. The history of the seaside resort is also reflected in the Olofsbo Havsbadsförening association, which was founded to get beach life in Olofsbo under way. Alfred Bengtsson, Karl-Johans Gustav and Gustav i Olofsbäck opened the first kiosk on the beach.

Horse riding and regional specialities

Olofsbo Islandshästar offers horseback rides with Icelandic horses to the beach or into the forest. This expands the possible experiences beyond swimming and cycling with an activity that takes in the area’s different landscapes. Those interested in the local beverage culture can enjoy beer tastings at Agerörs Kustbryggeri, by booking in advance, either at the brewery or in the orangery building.
