Suurpea on Hara Bay

Suurpea combines the coastal landscape of Hara Bay with an unusual military history. The village lies in Lahemaa National Park on the shore of Hara Bay. A documented way to access this landscape is the Hara Bay Nature Study Trail. It is 3.3 km long and leads from Suurpea to Pähkneeme. The trail is one of three coastal nature study trails on the Pärispea Peninsula. These trails introduce the sea and coastal habitats and are suitable for hiking. This makes it possible to experience the coastal landscape not merely as a backdrop, but along a designated route.

The two trails also differ in their spatial form: the Hara Bay Nature Study Trail connects Suurpea and Pähkneeme, while the Suurpea Loop takes up the history of the coastal village as a circular route. One trail therefore leads between two places, while the other focuses on local history. At 3.3 km, the Hara Bay Nature Study Trail is the longer of the two; the Suurpea Loop is approximately 2 km long.

Military history as a distinctive feature of the village

The village of Suurpea includes the former Suurpea military settlement with four residential buildings. It was built in the second half of the 1950s. The historical character of this area is therefore an essential part of the village's history, not a general designation for the coast.

The military-historical dimension is explored on the approximately 2 km-long Suurpea Loop. The circular route presents the history of the coastal village. In addition, the history of the Suurpea military town points to a broader context: Hara Harbour and the laboratory buildings were located on the other side of the bay, while the ship degaussing institute was several kilometres away. Together with the Suurpea military town, they formed the Navy's 1st experimental site. Those travelling around Suurpea can therefore understand the area both through its coastal habitats and through this distinctive military past.

Suurpea's military heritage is considered valuable to Lahemaa, Estonia, and Europe. The Hara Bay Nature Study Trail and the Suurpea Loop have different focuses, without conflating their content.
