Brøndby Municipality between Coast, Fortification Landscape and Culture

The Vestvolden, which runs through Brøndby, is part of a 14.2-kilometre-long protected fortification of historical value and importance for biodiversity and the environment. In Brøndby Strand, the Strandpark complements this landscape as a seven-kilometre-long coastal and recreational area with white sandy beaches, dunes, lakes, meadows, dry grassland and small wooded areas.

Nature and paths

In the Strandpark, Brøndby near Gyvelhuse and Strandporten has a beach section awarded the Blue Flag. Brøndbyskoven offers nature experiences all year round and numerous opportunities to enjoy nature. Festpladsen has benches, tables, a fire pit, a nature playground and exercise equipment. Walking and cycling paths run through Esplanadeparken.

The Kløverstier are signposted walking and cycling routes in Brøndby. Four Kløverstier routes in Brøndbyøster are approximately two to 14 kilometres long and start and end at the Kløverstipælen by Brøndbyøster Station. Vestegnsruten is a 42.195-kilometre-long route that runs, among other places, through Brøndby Strand and can be completed in full or in sections on foot, by bicycle or by running. Different route lengths and modes of transport make it easier to compare the options for an active day.

Brøndby Havn is the northernmost marina in Køge Bugt Strandpark. The harbour has facilities and a location that make it suitable as a departure point for excursions into the forest and to the beach.

History and culture

The present-day Brøndbyøster Kirke was built around 1150 from fieldstone and limestone and is one of Denmark’s oldest surviving churches. Middelalderlandsbyen consists of reconstructed houses from 1350 and has animal husbandry. At the Vestvolden, information boards and games convey the history of the fortification.

Forstadsmuseet presents Brøndby’s local history in public spaces, including through pop-up exhibitions and guided city tours. Forstadsmuseet’s permanent exhibition “Ta' på tur i tiden” can be seen at Kulturhuset Brønden. The DIF Museum is not open every day; an appointment with the management should be arranged in advance for a visit.

Brøndbyøster Kirke hosts concerts during the winter season featuring music from the Middle Ages to the present day, including soloist and choral concerts. Brøndbyvester Kirke is the oldest building in the municipality of Brøndbyvester; the stone church was probably built from chalk stone in the 12th century. “Bykunst i Brøndby” offers free outdoor art experiences.

Events and leisure destinations

Brøndby Kulturnat is a recurring cultural event in Brøndby held on the first Friday in October. KulturCamp is a free creative winter holiday programme at Kulturhuset Brønden for children and young people from Brøndby. Store Cykeldag is an annual cycling event in Brøndby that visits local attractions and businesses.

At Dyregården Søholt, children and young people learn how to care for and look after many different animals, including reptiles, horses, pigs, chickens, rabbits, birds and goats. The nature playground behind Brøndby Stadium in the middle of Sportsbyen has an obstacle course with balance activities among the trees, a large pyramid net and trampolines.

Middelalderlandsbyen offers free public events for families and friends. Brøndby Naturskole holds three public events every year. Its outdoor areas can be visited and used independently, provided they are used responsibly and left clean. The playground at Brøndby Havn gives children a place to play while the family enjoys the view.
