Nivå between Art, Beach and the Øresund

Nivå on the Øresund coast brings together beaches, a harbour, nature and art within a compact area. At Nivå Beach, you can enjoy a sandy beach with a long bathing jetty extending into the Øresund. The jetty is also accessible to people with disabilities. Nivå Harbour was built in a former clay pit belonging to Nivå Brickworks and has 426 berths. This means that choosing where to go starts with three different coastal themes: swimming, harbour scenery and industrial history.

Art and history in Nivå

A cultural highlight is the Nivaagaard Collection. There, you can see works of art from the Italian and Northern European Renaissance, the Dutch Baroque and the Danish Golden Age. The collection also presents two or three temporary exhibitions each year. Activities for children and adults complement the offering. The different periods and changing presentations provide different ways of engaging with the collection. In the park at the Nivaagaard Collection, the rhododendrons are in full bloom at the end of May and the beginning of June.

The Nivaagaard Ring Kiln is part of the area’s industrial history. A visit includes a guided tour covering the history of the area and the brickworks, as well as how the ring kiln works. The tour makes the industrial monument a place where history and technology come together. The ring-kiln plant at Nivaagaard Brickworks began operating in 1870 and is a rare surviving industrial monument. The sculpture St Catherine could be visited from 1 May 2024 in the Station Garden of the Nivaagaard Collection at Nivå station.

Coastal Meadows, Birds and Biodiversity

The coastal meadows at Nivå Bay are a year-round resting place for thousands of birds. Over the years, more than 200 bird species have been observed there. Those who want to combine experiences in nature with a visit to the town will find a clear thematic contrast here to the art collection and the former brickworks. The Station Garden is also maintained as a biodiversity area. Insect-friendly natural fences and beehives are part of it, as is education about biodiversity.

Travelling between the Coast and the Hinterland

Nivå station is located in North Zealand, more precisely in Fredensborg Municipality, on the railway line between Copenhagen Central Station and Helsingør. The line is called the Coast Line; regional trains operate on the route and stop in Nivå, among other places. At the Nivaagaard Collection, electric cars can be charged in the car park and electric bicycles at the bicycle stands.

Two differently oriented routes are ideal for active days. Dronningerunden is a 40-kilometre signposted cycle route. For the cycling route, the 40 kilometres provide a clear framework for planning an active day. It leads inland from Nivå on the Øresund coast to Lake Esrum and Fredensborg Palace, thereby connecting the coast and the hinterland. The Langstrupstien trail leads from Fredensborg through villages and forests to Nivå’s coastal meadows on the Øresund; with this change, it offers a different landscape experience from the inland cycle route. For further orientation within the same local context, there are also Humlebæk Humlebæk, Kokkedal Kokkedal and Niverød Niverød.
