Frederikssund on the Roskilde Fjord – Culture, Nature and Water

Frederikssund combines cultural sites with the Roskilde Fjord and its maritime themes. The fjord has narrow fairways, numerous small islands and very shallow water; almost everywhere, the water is less than 6 metres deep. Today, it is mainly used for recreational sailing and eel fishing and has been designated a wildlife reserve since 1995.

Culture and History

The Willumsen Museum in Frederikssund is a municipal, state-funded museum with a collection of 8,000 works. Vikingebopladsen offers a different historical perspective: it is an open-air museum with five reconstructed pit houses. The longhouse there represents a permanent Viking residence.

The Frederikssund Vikingespil takes place every summer in June and July at the Kalvøen open-air theatre on the Roskilde Fjord. The guided tours include a walk with views over the Roskilde Fjord as well as a visit to Vikingebopladsen with its reconstructed pit houses and longhouse.

The Frederikssund Museum Færgegården conveys the story of life on the fjord from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum includes a prehistoric trail and a prehistoric settlement site; the garden is freely accessible even when the museum is closed. The park and the grove with the memorial stones around Jægerspris Slot are also freely accessible. Selsø Slot was built by the nobleman Jakob Ulfeldt in the 1570s.

Parkteatret is the regional theatre of Frederikssund Municipality and stages theatre performances.

Trails and Nature

Fjordstien is a nature trail along the Roskilde Fjord and Isefjord. Along its entire 275-kilometre length, it is intended for cyclists and hikers. Small blue signs mark the route, which bears route number 40.

Jægerspris Nordskov consists of the two forest areas of Fælledskoven in the west and Studehaven in the east. Frederik VII’s hunting pavilion is located at the forest’s highest point, Frederikshøj.

Sillebro Ã…dal is located in the centre of Frederikssund. Barbecuing, lighting fires and staying overnight in the shelters are permitted there. The various landscape and trail experiences therefore range from a centrally located valley to a 275-kilometre route along the water.

Beaches and Water Connections

Kalvøen Beach has a 640-metre-long bathing beach. At Kalvøen Beach, you can swim from the rowing club’s pontoon bridge.

Marbæk Beach has Blue Flag status and rescue equipment is available there.

The MF Columbus motor ferry connects Kulhuse at the northern tip of Hornsherred with Sølager on the southern side of Halsnæs approximately from 1 April until the autumn holidays.

The cultural and harbour baths in Frederikssund are suitable for swimming and winter swimming.
