Bagsværd Sø serves as Denmark’s national rowing stadium and is used for training by elite athletes, recreational athletes and leisure sports enthusiasts. At the same time, the lake is part of the Mølleå system, which stretches from its source in the area west of Bastrup Sø at Roskilde Fjord to its mouth at Øresund.

Water and paths

Canoes can be rented at the boat rental facility on Bagsværd Sø. A network of paths leads all the way around the lake. Walkers have free access along the entire lakeshore in Bagsværd Søpark.

Nature and landscape

Aldershvile Slotspark has been a public park since 1927. Its dry grassland is home to heather and small St John’s-wort, which are rare species in Zealand. Aldershvile Slotsruin is protected as a prehistoric monument.

Høje Gladsaxe Park is a protected natural area of just over 53 hectares, characterised by grassland with hills and lakes. Smør- and Fedtmosen, including the meadows, is even larger: this approximately 150-hectare, almost untouched natural area comprises marshes, small lakes, heath woodland, scrub marsh, reed beds, meadows and woodland. There is a network of paths, part of which belongs to the overarching main path network between Kalvebod and Værløse; Smørmosen also has a birdwatching tower.

Cycling and walks

At Cykelbanen i Mørkhøj, children can practise balance, traffic rules and greater safety when cycling through play and exercise. Cykelbanen i Mørkhøj is open to everyone. Another green cycling connection is Vandledningsstien between Høje Gladsaxevej and Vandtårnsvej/Tinghøjvej; it runs along several interconnected rainwater basins.

Svaleruten is a nature, culture and experience route with a continuous cycle path approximately 28 kilometres long in Gladsaxe. The Aldershvile walk begins at Bagsværd Station and leads via Aldershvilevej to Aldershvilepark and the castle ruins; it is not long and can be walked at a leisurely pace.

History and architecture

Gladsaxefortet is protected as a historic monument under the Danish Museum Act. Its grounds include the casemate building, the caponiers, the fortification, the remains of the ramparts and dry moat, as well as a surrounding park. Under Local Plan 70, “Ved Fortet, Kagså Kvarter”, the grounds are designated as a recreational and green area.

Bagsværd Kirke was designed by Jørn Utzon. Its interiors are inspired by clouds, which is reflected in the curved ceilings. Genforeningsstenen commemorates the reunification of North Schleswig with Denmark in 1920 and now stands at the corner of Bagsværd Hovedgade and Bagsværdvej.

Culture and community

Bibliografen is a cultural centre that combines a cinema and a library under one roof. Spillestedet Richter at Telefonfabrikken gives young people space to make music and experience music and community; other user groups are also welcome. Telefonfabrikken also has creative workshops for ceramics and jewellery making, painting and stonework.

Gladsaxedagen is Gladsaxe’s annual festival and cultural day held in the area around Gladsaxe Town Hall. The 14th Gladsaxe Jazzfest took place in the town hall garden at Gladsaxe Town Hall, featuring three days, nine concerts and free admission.

BIBLIOTEK+ in Høje Gladsaxe offers various communal dining events, including green community meals and the monthly shared meal “HG spiser sammen”. Behind Gladsaxe Svømmehal, Caféhaven offers free and open access to an inflatable jumping pillow area, an outdoor swimming pool, a sandbox, a swing and a panna court.

Søborg is a separate locality within Gladsaxe. Theatre performances are held in Gladsaxe in the assembly hall of Grønnemose Skole at Høje Gladsaxe Torv 4, 2860 Søborg.
