Græsted between forest paths and lake

If you would like to combine nature and exercise in Græsted, Wielandts Sø is a prominent landmark. The dammed lake lies in the northeastern part of Græsted Hegn and is characterised by a diverse range of flora and fauna. Both the Sundhedssporet and the Hjertestien begin here.

There are four car parks at Wielandtsøen: one by the lake in the north of the forest and three on the southern side. At the northern car park, you will find a fire shelter and a barbecue area with tables and benches. Fishing in Wielandts Sø is free, but anglers aged 18 to 65 are required to have a fishing licence.

In Græsted Aggebo Hegn, orientation, nature observation and seasonal activities come together. The “Find vej” offering includes 30 easy-to-recognise orienteering posts. The forest has a healthy population of deer, and you may see or hear ravens there. Late summer and autumn are suitable for picking mushrooms. Horse riders can also use the forest area: riding is permitted on all paths and unpaved roads that are wider than 2.5 m.

Forest, history and special places

At the northern edge of Aggebo Hegn, you can see a stone wall that is more than 200 years old. In the same forest lies a Bronze Age burial mound that is approximately 3,500 years old; there are also traces of so-called raised-field systems. Another special feature is “Længslen efter Sverige”, a viewpoint in the northern part of Aggebo Hegn. In good visibility, the view extends as far as Kullen in Sweden.

The history of the landscape is also visible. At the Kulsvierhytten by Dams Sø, volunteers from Aggebo Kulsvierlaug burn charcoal in a charcoal kiln using traditional methods at the end of every August. Shelter No. 2 by the Kulsvierhytten can accommodate approximately four overnight guests. The shelter can be reached from a small car park on Aggebo Skovvej via a path of approximately 300 m. Græsted Station and the railway depot were inaugurated in 1880 as the terminus of the Gribskovbanen. The station is intended for visits on Saturday afternoons from around 12 noon.

Hiking and cycling around Græsted

“En tur i Hegnet” begins at Græsted Station and ends at Helsinge Station. The walking route follows paths and forest roads through Græsted Hegn, Aggebo Hegn and Valby Hegn. The town can be explored more briefly via the Græsted Perimetersti, a path that circles the entire town of Græsted. In the vicinity of Græsted, there is also a 12 km hiking trail around Søborg Sø along the lakeshore. Søborg Sø lies immediately northeast of Græsted.

From Græsted Station, the signposted cycle route 33 follows Græsted Stationsvej, Holtvej and Ørbakkevej. The route is 27 km long, runs from Gilleleje Station to Frederiksborg Slot and can be cycled year-round. At Søborg Sø, it follows the regional corridor from Gilleleje to Hillerød on the western side. This allows you to distinguish between a circular route around the town, a forest connection and a longer regional cycle tour.
