Getting There and Finding Your Way

Pårup is a stop on the Lokaltog 950R line on the Gribskovbanen route between Hillerød and Gilleleje. The history of the station is also linked to this connection: Pårup Station was planned as the only intermediate station on the Græsted–Gilleleje section of the extension of the Gribskov Railway. The history of the area goes back a long way. Archaeological settlement sites around Pårup and the former Søborg Sø show that this area was inhabited over a period of approximately 10,000 years. King Christian V had it laid out between 1680 and 1690 with eight-pointed intersections and perfectly straight roads; in 2015, the landscape became part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Another historical point of reference is Søborg Castle, which was built in the 12th century by Archbishop Eskil as a self-contained fortress with a curtain wall and moat. Today, the ruin is the focal point as a destination in the region surrounding Pårup.

The hike at Søborg Sø is approximately 4 kilometres long and takes 2.5 hours. The northern hiking section at Søborg Sø is easily accessible from Pårup Trinbræt.

Those who prefer a longer circuit can consider the 13-kilometre route around Søborg Sø. It offers opportunities for hikers, cyclists and horse riders. The ruin of Søborg Castle is also located along cycle route 33 between Hillerød and Gilleleje. This allows nature and cultural experiences to be considered separately or combined when planning, without confusing the different routes.

The lake is also a distinct focus for observing wildlife: The area around Søborg Sø attracts numerous bird species. White-tailed eagles can be observed there, bitterns can be heard, and migratory birds that use the lake as a resting place can be seen.
