Helsinge between Gribskov and the North Coast

Forests and paths as your first point of orientation

Helsinge is centrally located in Gribskov between the forests and the seaside resorts of the North Coast. Gribskov is considered Denmark’s largest old-growth forest. This gives you a choice of location where nature experiences and orientation in the town go hand in hand: Six hiking trails are marked in the forest, including short and long routes. The different trail lengths provide a concrete basis if you prefer to plan your days on foot rather than exclusively in the town centre.

By bicycle, Cycle Route 32 provides a direct connection through Helsinge. It leads from Helsinge Station via Gadekærvej, continuing north past the pedestrian zone, the village pond and the town church, and then out of the town. This sequence connects the station with several prominent points in the town before continuing into the countryside. It is 26 km long and signposted throughout with the blue cycle route sign bearing the number 32. The length and signage provide practical orientation if you want to base your search for a hotel in Helsinge around an active daily itinerary.

History between the church, Gadekær and the forest

A historic landmark in the town is Helsinge Church. Its oldest parts, including the small chancel and the eastern part of the nave, probably date from the first half of the 12th century. At Helsinge Gadekær stands the Mindemuren memorial wall. As part of the “Levende Sten” project, it bears number 8 and is one of the 63 selected memorial stones and plaques in this project that are accessible outdoors. Its history can be heard or read on site via an attached QR code. The church and the Mindemuren represent different historical points of reference: sacred architectural history and commemorative culture at Gadekær.

Independent historic attractions can also be found outside the town centre. Mor Gribs Hule, also known as Mother Grib’s Cave, is a well-preserved megalithic tomb from the Neolithic period, dating back around 5,000 years. It is located west of Store Gribsø, on the other side of Helsingevej opposite the car park. South of Helsinge lies Pibe Mølle in a hilly landscape. The mill operates on selected days of the year; for a visit, the specific operating day therefore matters.

Culture and further ideas for day trips

Gribskov Kultursal hosts musical events ranging from rock concerts to chamber music. Gribskov Svømmehal has a 25-metre pool for fitness swimming, a three-metre diving board and a water slide. Alongside the forest, cycle route and monuments, this means that cultural and swimming activities are also available as different points of reference for planning your trip.

The Helsinge Library is also relevant for local self-service facilities: At weekends and on public holidays, it offers access during self-service opening hours.
