Herlev Municipality: Discover Nature, Culture and Active Days
Herlev Municipality reveals its natural side particularly clearly at Hjortespringkilen. The protected nature area in Herlev includes marshes, dense woodland and several lakes with wildlife. You can explore Hjortespringkilen on foot, by bicycle and on horseback; there are also 2.4 kilometres of separate riding trails. Den Grønne Akse forms a green corridor connection for pedestrians and cyclists.
Wetlands, birds and green discoveries
Træbanken is an arboretum dedicated to Danish trees and shrubs. Information boards provide details about each species. Near the shelter, which accommodates eight people, there is running water. This makes the site a place that combines nature observation with a practical spot for a break.
Herlev’s wetlands also offer varied landscapes. Smørmosen and Fedtmosen are breeding and resting areas for almost 200 bird species. Sømosen is a shallow wetland with water areas, reed beds and small islets and islands. Paths make it possible to walk around the area; the protected site covers 23 hectares. Sømosen is also one of Denmark’s 25 known sacrificial bogs associated with war booty sacrifices.
Bakkegården Nature Park offers the opportunity to learn about nature and biodiversity outdoors among plants, water and wildlife. The park contains more than 500 different plant species or plant types. The public playground in Hanevangsparken has a basketball court, swings, a zip line, and equipment for climbing and balancing. Sansehaven in Hospitalsparken complements the nature experience with various plant beds designed to stimulate the senses.
Art, history and local events
Gammelgaard is an art centre for Danish and international contemporary art and presents four changing exhibitions each year. Admission to the exhibitions is free. The building is located on one of the original farms of Hjortespring, which were established in the 1760s. Gammelgaard also includes Musikparken, where you can play musical instruments outdoors. Café Gammelgaard serves homemade cakes and light lunch dishes.
Herlev Festuge takes place annually in calendar week 35. During the local town festival, the town centre features association stalls, music, stage entertainment and food from many different cuisines. Herlev Church dates from the Middle Ages and is also the venue for several concerts featuring new and older music. Herlev Kro, also known as Herløv Kro, opened in 1863. Hjulmandens Hus was built in 1814 by wheelwright Peder Hansen.
Swimming pool, ice and stage entertainment
Hjortespringbadet is a public swimming pool with four pools and a covered water slide. The facilities also include slides, volleyball, ladder golf, Kongespil and picnicking on the lawns. The therapy pool, heated to 34 degrees, is 110 to 130 centimetres deep. Access is included with admission to the swimming centre; except during the adults-only evening sessions, the pool is open to everyone.
Herlev Skøjtehal has two interconnected ice rinks. The training rink opened in September 2019. Since 1977, it has offered opportunities for playing, training and competitions on the ice. Ice skates can be rented in sizes 26 to 50; skate aids for beginners are available in limited numbers.
Herlev Teater presents a broad range of theatre performances, including humorous, musical and more serious productions. Herlev Teaterbio screens films for all audiences and is home to the film clubs Filmpaletten and Skolebio. A hearing loop, an accessible toilet and step-free access are available for visitors.
Library and creative activities
Herlev Library regularly hosts activities for adults, including visits by authors and experts, film clubs, handicraft cafés, workshops on family history, listening clubs and reading groups. Herlev’s main library on Herlev Bygade offers space for inspiration, community and knowledge, as well as a place to linger. Herlev Billedskole offers courses for adults, open to adults from within and outside Herlev Municipality. In addition, you can combine nature, culture and active leisure activities in Herlev Municipality within a compact municipal setting.
