West of Hornbæk Harbour lies a large sandy beach with dunes behind it, which has been awarded the Blue Flag. Hornbæk Beach is wide, with fine-grained sand and protective dunes. Together with the harbour, this stretch of coast provides a clear basis for choosing where to stay: the beach and maritime surroundings are tangible points of reference here.

Paths through forest and coastal landscape

At Hornbæk Plantation, you will find several different ways to explore the landscape. A yellow-marked hiking route of approximately 8 km leads through most of the forest. The Find-Vej route combines moving through the forest with searching for orienteering posts and recording the associated letter codes. The Istids- og sandflugtsruten is shorter: this approximately 3 km themed trail passes through a landscape shaped by the Ice Age. For a day in the plantation, you can use the route length as a simple timeframe. The difference between a shorter and a longer loop affects the extent of your time in the forest, while the idea behind each route determines the character of the tour. The combination of a hiking route, orienteering posts and an Ice Age landscape connects physical activity with different observation focuses when planning a day in the forest area of Hornbæk Plantation.

Another trail system runs around Hornbæk Lake and Horneby Engsø, as well as through the adjacent marshland. Hornbæk Lake is home to, among other species, pike, zander, eels and grass carp. Nordkyststien, regional cycle route 47 from Hundested to Helsingør, runs through the Hornbæk Plantation area along the coast from Dronningmølle to Ålsgårde.

Water, harbour and history

At SUPspot Hornbæk, visitors can rent stand-up paddleboards and receive an introduction to using them. Store Badedag takes place every year at Hornbæk Beach as the opening event of the summer bathing season; around 900 people go into the sea on the occasion. On the beach near the harbour is Hornbæk Strandlegeplads, with climbing, swings, balancing activities and imaginative play as the captain of your own ship. It has been located at the harbour since 2010.

The present-day harbour of Hornbæk, with two piers, was begun in 1876 and handed over to the fishermen in 1878. More than 200 years earlier, an attempt had already been made to establish a harbour on the exposed coast of North Zealand. In Hornbæk Plantation, 25 Bronze Age burial mounds and an ancient sacrificial stone from around 3500 BC, which was used as a symbol of fertility, recall older traces of the landscape. Hornbæk Havnefest is a recurring harbour tradition with documented origins in 1881; today it takes place as a three-day festival and has once again been announced for calendar week 30 in 2027.
