Hørsholm Municipality: Palace Garden, Forest and Øresund Coast

Hørsholm Slotshave brings courtly history and an established landscape together in a compact area. The garden preserves the layout of the former Baroque garden of Hirschholm Slot as well as lime trees that are more than 250 years old. At the same time, Hørsholm Slotshave was the setting for the relationship between Queen Caroline Mathilde and Struensee at Hirschholm Slot. Hørsholm Municipality also includes the town of Rungsted Kyst.

Culture

In Folehave, there are 59 burial mounds from the Bronze Age. Two long barrows from the Stone Age have also been preserved there; one of these structures measures 32 metres in length and 9 metres in width. Hørsholm Egns Museum is located in an 18th-century building that originally served as the tenant farmer's house of the royal Hirschholm estate. The museum tells the story of Hirschholm Slot, freedom of the press and a royal affair, combining these themes with modern exhibitions and creative activities for children.

The neoclassical Hørsholm Kirke was designed by C.F. Hansen, consecrated on 21 September 1823 and bears clear similarities to his Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen. It is normally open during the summer half of the year and in calendar week 42. Another historical trace leads to Usserød Klædefabrik: It was founded in 1791 and began producing uniform cloth in 1809. Its well-preserved buildings are an example of the reuse of a decommissioned industrial complex.

In the centre of Hørsholm is Kulturhus Trommen, with changing exhibitions, a cinema, a library, a theatre and a concert hall. Its distinctive design and selected materials have made the building an attraction in Hørsholm since its inauguration in 1988.

Nature

The Hørsholm Arboretum comprises around 2,000 species and is Denmark's largest collection of trees and shrubs. It can be visited every day from 7:30 a.m. until sunset. Twice a year, at the beginning of May and in September, it hosts open days. During these events, researchers, staff members or students talk about their research and the trees in the collection.

Kongens Dam is a restored large pond with an island that benefits visitors to the forest as well as animals and plants. The Rungstedlund Bird Sanctuary comprises wetlands, grazing areas and old wild forest and has a rich biodiversity. Guided tours of the sanctuary pass Karen Blixen's grave, the Bronze Age burial mound Ewalds Høj and Herregårdslunden.

A guided tour of the Karen Blixen Museum Rungstedlund takes visitors through the 15-hectare bird sanctuary that Karen Blixen established in 1958.

Trails and activities

Rungsted Kyst railway station is about 500 metres from the northern entrance to Rungsted Hegn. In the Folehave and Hørsholm Slotshave area, there are three marked hiking or running routes measuring 9.5 kilometres, 5.2 kilometres and 2.4 kilometres in length. The Hjertestien in Hørsholm Slotshave is an approximately 2-kilometre exercise walk.

The Blixen Route is a 16-kilometre circular hiking trail that starts and ends at the Karen Blixen Museum. The Kløverstier comprise four marked hiking, running and cycling routes that begin at the Kløverpælen in PH Park. On the red route, you can listen to the horror story “Allikernes Arv” via QR codes along the trail.

In Sjælsølund Skov, wild camping is permitted throughout the entire forest. Hørsholm Idrætspark comprises two ice rinks, a swimming pool, a sports hall, a squash hall, a badminton hall and two tennis halls. Hørsholm Golf's six-hole pitch-and-putt course is open to everyone and can be played without membership through the pay-and-play system for a green fee.

Rungsted Havn is located on the Øresund Coast and has 850 berths.
