Preserved Village and Distinctive Buildings

A preservation plan from 1966 preserved Høsterkøb as a village; the surrounding green areas were placed under protection. Several distinct historical references come together in Høsterkøb Church: it was designed by Ulrik Adolph Plesner, while the decorations were executed according to drawings by Th. Bindesbøll. The Renaissance altarpiece comes from Birkerød Church. Thus, the church’s design, decorations and the origin of the altarpiece form a shared historical context. At another distinctive point, the intersection of Høsterkøbvej and Hørsholm Kongevej, there is a memorial stone for Princess Charlotte Amalie (1706–1782).

Ã…sebakken and Paths through the Landscape

Åsebakken offers various landmarks for walks. From the summit, there is a wide view over Sjælsø and the surrounding landscape. At the picnic area, tables and benches provide a place to enjoy the view. From Åsebakken, an approximately 2 km walking trail leads to Jægerhytten in Eskemose Skov. A marked route of approximately 8 km leads from Åsebakken into Rude Skov and past Maglebjerg. The KulturSlangen also connects nature, art and history. Its route runs via Høje Sandbjerg to Høsterkøb and Birkerød. In the landscape, a distinctive terminal moraine ridge characterizes the northern part of Rude Skov and Høsterkøb. Among the by far largest and most prominent terminal moraines in Rudersdal Municipality are Maglebjerg, Åsebakken and Højbjerg in Rude Skov, as well as Skolebakken in Høsterkøb. Maglebjerg thus appears both as a destination on the route and as part of the defining landscape formation. Sænkesø lies in the middle of Høsterkøb village, lined by houses.

Pilgrimage and Religious Connections

A special seasonal tradition is the pilgrimage to Vor Frue af Aasebakken. It brings together congregations from all over eastern Denmark for joint prayer and an outdoor mass and takes place in spring, typically in May. The Vor Frue Monastery also houses a branch of the Benedictine Order.
