Ishøj Municipality: Art, Beach Park and Nature

Ishøj Municipality brings coastal experiences, art and nature together in a compact thematic area. Ishøj Beach accounts for approximately 3 km of the Køge Bay Beach Park’s total length of 7 km. This means that your travel decision need not focus solely on the beach: you can choose between art, walking trails, wildlife observation, family-oriented experiences and cultural and historical sites.

Beach Park, Water and Trails

At Ishøj Beach, you can rent paddleboards from Café Ka’nalu. Four Kløverstier routes offer distances of 2.5 km, 5.5 km, 7.5 km and 12 km for walks. The range makes it easier to distinguish a shorter loop from a longer tour and to take your preferred distance into account when planning. As an art trail, the 2.2 km ARKENWALK runs from Ishøj Station to the ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art.

Art Overlooking Køge Bay

The ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art offers a permanent collection of Danish, Nordic and international art from 1990 onwards. ARKENWALK passes through the station forecourt, a residential area, a tunnel and a villa district, and continues through the Beach Park landscape with meadows and lakes. The ARKEN café offers views of Køge Bay.

Nature and Experiences for Different Interests

Ishøj Animal Park is home to Scottish Highland cattle, marsh sheep, pygmy goats and Danish Landrace goats. It also includes a nature playground with an obstacle course made from natural materials. Bredekærgård offers opportunities to meet animals and enjoy nature-based play. At Ishøj Nature Centre, you can book programmes with a nature guide. The Beach Park organises ten tours each year in cooperation with Ishøj Nature Centre. If you prefer an interactive way to explore the area, you can discover Tranegilde on a guided tour that uses your own mobile phone and QR codes.

Cultural History in Ishøj

Vildtbanesten is a protected national monument. Christian VII had it erected in 1775 to mark the royal hunting monopoly. The grave of the Prince of Ishøj dates from the Roman Iron Age and is approximately 1,725 years old; the Prince of Ishøj is on display in the residential building at Bredekærgård.

Oscar under broen was built entirely from local scrap and recycled materials in 2016. The machine house, the collection well building and the valve chamber building at Thorsbro Waterworks are also protected. For families, Ishøj Theatre complements the offering with typically three performances per year for children aged 3 to 9. Ishøj Theatre also offers classes and workshops.
