Jægerspris is ideal for a trip combining historic sites, forest landscapes and the history of Roskilde Fjord. The castle park features a collection of wild rhododendron species from around the world. In the wider surrounding area lies Færgelunden, a large forest area by Roskilde Fjord with burial mounds from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages.

Culture between Castle, Museum and Memorial Park

The Johannes Wiedewelt Memorial Park is a sculpture park with 54 memorial stones erected between 1777 and 1789. The memorial park extends from the castle park into the surrounding Slotshegnet forest. The memorial stones feature QR codes with information about the 83 honoured heroes. The upper terrace of Julianehøj has seating with views of the memorial stones.

The museum at Jægerspris Castle features memorial rooms with silk wallpaper in the audience chamber and an elaborately designed stucco ceiling. There are also permanent exhibitions on the history of the orphanage and the archaeological finds of Frederik VII. Since 1984, Færgegården has been a local history museum for Frederikssund Municipality. The permanent exhibition “Menneske og Fjord” shows how life around Roskilde Fjord has changed over thousands of years. The grounds also contain a reconstructed Stone Age hunter-gatherer settlement. Around public holidays and during school holidays, families can take part in activities involving old Danish traditions.

Nordskov, Historic Paths and Fjord Landscapes

Jægerspris Nordskov consists of the two forest areas Fælledskoven in the west and Studehaven in the east. There are numerous deer and birds of prey there; the King Oak is also estimated to be between 1,400 and 1,900 years old. The protected coastal meadows in the wider surrounding area of the forests around Jægerspris can be viewed from Nordskov, from Færgelunden or from the water.

For cyclists, a bicycle route of approximately 14 kilometres through Jægerspris Nordskov is described. In the wider surrounding area, the 275-kilometre Fjordstien nature trail also runs along Roskilde Fjord and Isefjord; it is suitable for cyclists and hikers. The Hjertestien in Slotshegnet either starts and ends at Rejsestalden in Jægerspris or at Jægerspris Castle. It passes through historic parts of Slotshegnet laid out in the 1740s, as well as passage graves and dolmens from the Stone Age.
