København: Amalienborg, Nyhavn and Culture

Culture and History

The Nationalmuseet presents exhibitions on Danish prehistory, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, as well as Denmark’s history from 1660 to 2000. The museum provides a free audio guide app for iOS and Android for visitors.

Amalienborg is the residence of the royal family in København and consists of four identical palaces surrounding an octagonal square. In the centre stands Salys’s equestrian statue of Frederik V. Christian VII’s Palace at Amalienborg is open for public tours.

The Thorvaldsens Museum houses Thorvaldsen’s sculptures, models and drawings. Its permanent exhibitions include his collection of antiquities, his collection of plaster casts and his sculptures.

The Round Tower is Europe’s oldest functioning observatory building. Its spiral ramp leads to a 360-degree view over the city of København.

Rosenborg Castle is located in the King’s Garden in the heart of København and houses royal art treasures. The castle preserves the Danish Crown Jewels in underground vaults.

Visitors can view the state rooms at Christiansborg Palace. The ruins beneath the palace are also accessible, including a medieval wall.

Harbour and Routes

The Little Mermaid sits on a rock in the water at the Langelinie pier. The sculpture was created by Edvard Eriksen in 1913 and is a 15-minute walk from Østerport Station.

Nyhavn has brightly painted houses dating from the 17th century. Canal tours depart from there. The Danish fairy-tale author Hans Christian Andersen lived in three different houses in Nyhavn.

Themed cycling routes in København take visitors to natural attractions. København’s harbour has swimming zones and harbour baths.

Activities in København

CopenHill offers the opportunity to ski and snowboard in the middle of København. Its paths and stairs lead upwards; the shortest route from the foot to the summit is approximately 450 metres long.

Street Food and Creative Places

Reffen is a street food market and cultural meeting place on Refshaleøen in København. The market has around 35 food stalls. Reffen also includes four creative workshops.
