Kregme Church and the History of the Village

The village of Kregme at the foot of Arrenæs dates back to the Iron Age, approximately to the year 500 AD. One particularly prominent testimony to the history of the area is Kregme Church. The oldest part of the church is more than 800 years old. It stands on a small, steep hill between Roskilde Fjord and Arresø.

The area around Kregme Church is designated as a church setting and is of particular importance for experiencing the interplay between the church and the landscape or village environment. Inside, there is a heavily restored painting depicting the Massacre of the Innocents in Bethlehem, dated to the period from 1200 to 1250. The unusual shape of the building is connected with the terrain: for this reason, a structural section was built on the north side of the chancel, giving the church its own irregular character.

Views, Cliffs and Nature near Kregme

One destination for views across the landscape is Grævlingehøj near Kregme. The viewpoint offers views over Arresø and Roskilde Fjord. Access is via Guldsmedevej, a side road off Sommerfuglevej. At Grævlingehøj near Lille Kregme, there are also dry, sunny and open coastal cliffs that are suitable as a habitat for rare species.

At Hvide Klint, there is a nature-oriented, protected open-air area close to the city for children and adults of all ages. There is also a 108-metre-long adventure bridge there.

Trails for Walks and Active Days

When arriving by public transport, the walk on Arrenæs can begin at Kregme Church; the route then follows the lakeshore. For planning the day, this route can be arranged as a sequence beginning at the church and then continuing along the lake.

Another distinctive route is Bakkestien near Frederiksværk. It runs along the crest of an old coastal cliff and offers views of the town and Roskilde Fjord. Bakkestien is part of Fjordstien, which is connected to the national cycling and hiking routes.

Several powder towers once stood on the distinctive, partly wooded ridge of Bakkestien south of Frederiksværk’s old town. They served as powder magazines and were later demolished.

On Arrenæs, the route follows the lakeshore, while Bakkestien near Frederiksværk runs along the crest of an old coastal cliff. Grævlingehøj offers views over Arresø and Roskilde Fjord; Bakkestien offers views of the town and Roskilde Fjord. When arriving by public transport, the walk can begin at Kregme Church, while Bakkestien is connected to Fjordstien as well as the national cycling and hiking routes.
