Discover Skibby: Nature Trails and Historic Sites
Nature and Trails Around Skibby
If you would like to combine nature and exercise with regional history on your trip, Skibby offers various points of interest. The Frederikssund Hjertesti trail runs through Nordmandsskoven, Nordmandsmosen and Midtbanen and was inaugurated in May 2019. The route is 3.3 km long. Nordmandsskoven near Skibby includes woodland, lakes and more open natural areas. Nordmandsmosen is a recreational nature area close to the town, in the north of Skibby.
For a longer route, the Selsø-ruten is a useful guide: it is 8 km long and can be divided into two circular routes of 4 km each. The Fjordstien and the Selsø-ruten pass directly by Møllekrogen. There is a car park, a toilet, water and picnic tables there. Several paths converge at Møllekrogen, which also provides a place for an outdoor break.
Selsø Sø and Selsø Church
The churchyard of Selsø Church offers a wide view over Lake Selsø Sø. The lake is a 500-hectare bird protection area and thus forms a distinct natural feature in the surrounding area. The lake constitutes a natural setting of its own alongside the historic churchyard. For an outing with several focal points, the expansive lake view can be combined with the distinctive round church. Selsø Church was originally a round church. If you would also like to plan your route around public transport, bus route 318 runs from Frederikssund Station to the Selsø Kirke stop.
Church and Castle History
Skibby’s townscape also contains notable traces of history. The Skibby Chronicle was found in the masonry of Skibby Church in 1650. The church probably dates from around 1100 and has frescoes on the chancel vault and in the apse behind the altar. The apse painting is dated to approximately 1150–1175 and is among the oldest frescoes in Denmark.
Selsø Castle was built in the 1570s by the nobleman Jakob Ulfeldt. In the castle, visitors can see Baroque decorations and wallpaper in the Empire rooms. Various events and activities for children and adults take place there throughout the year, including Sommeronsdage i naturen, concerts, lectures and Herregårdenes dag. The historical themes therefore differ significantly: Skibby Church represents early church and painting history, while Selsø Castle represents noble architecture, interiors and events.
