Tibirke – Sand History, Oldtidsvejen and Nature

If you would like to combine history, trails and nature observation when choosing your destination, Tibirke offers several distinctly different experiences. The landscape tells of drifting sands and ancient roads; at the same time, trails lead to viewpoints and along Holløse Bredning. Tibirke thus combines cultural heritage, a hike of approximately 3 km and nature observation.

Between Sand History and Cultural Heritage

At the edge of Tibirke, the Sand Drift Monument stands on a prominent slope. It was erected in 1738 in memory of the efforts to combat drifting sands. Part of the historic character of the landscape is that the sand swallowed the villages of Torup and Tibirke and transformed the original flat landscape with coastal meadows into a desert with large and small sand dunes. This history is complemented by Tibirke Church. It was probably built around 1120–1130 as a small Romanesque fieldstone church. Oldtidsvejen also passes through this historic landscape. The hike along Oldtidsvejen is approximately 3 km in total and runs through gently hilly, soft terrain. The car park for this hike is located at Tibirke Church. The largest section of Oldtidsvejen is a 3-metre-wide track with kerbstones and paving made of fieldstones.

Nature Observation and Views

Tisvilde Hegn borders Tibirke; almost the entire area is designated as a habitat area, and part of it is also designated as a bird protection area. This adds a designated nature area of significance to the cultural history, without requiring you to consider the themes separately. A trail leads from Tibirke to Holløse Bredning. There, the Danish Nature Agency has established a birdwatching hide in an old pumping station, from which you can observe the birdlife. For travellers who want to deliberately include nature experiences in their days, this trail is a destination in its own right alongside Oldtidsvejen. Tibirke Bakker also offers a clear point of orientation. Udsigten, at 57 metres above sea level, is the highest point of Tibirke Bakker and offers views of the surrounding landscape. The high point thus provides a visible contrast to the trails through the soft terrain.

Traces in Ellemosen

In Ellemosen, at the foot of Tibirke Bakker, an approximately 150-metre-long causeway made of wooden stakes, around 4,800 years old, was found in the 1940s. Today, you can continue beyond Ellemosen and see the place where the ancient causeway stood. In this way, the landscape can be understood not only through buildings and trails, but also through archaeological traces.
