Remniku: Peipsi Coast, Forest Trail and Cycling Route 142

Beach and trails on Lake Peipus

If you are looking for a combination of coast, hiking, cycling and nature for your stay, Remniku offers several clearly distinct points of interest. Cycling Route 142 reaches the Peipsi Coast at Remniku, where sandy beaches can be found. The Forest Trail section from Kuru to Remniku ends at Remniku Beach by the Suvi Recreation Centre. This is where a longer cycling connection meets a hiking trail that leads all the way to the beach.

Hiking the Forest Trail

The Forest Trail section from Kuru to Remniku runs via Kuru, Uusküla, Katase and Alajõe to Remniku. Its landscape alternates between different types of terrain: the route runs predominantly along sandy beaches, while in Alajõe it also follows a paved road and unpaved paths. This route is particularly interesting when choosing accommodation in Remniku if you do not want to consider trails and coastal sections separately.

The Forest Trail section from Remniku to Kuremäe follows a different direction. It runs via Imatu, Kaatermu and Kaidma to Kuremäe. From the Remniku section, the Forest Trail also passes through Alutaguse National Park, established in 2018. Its primary conservation objective is to protect Estonia’s largest coniferous forest area and wetland landscapes. The nature experience around Remniku therefore includes not only the beach but also forest and wetland landscapes along the route.

Cycling Route 142 between Lake Peipus and Narva

For active days, Cycling Route 142 is a point of reference in its own right. It runs from Kuremäe via Remniku and Jaama onwards to Kuningaküla and the Poruni primeval forest. Between Lake Peipus and Narva, the route is approximately 140 km long and includes around 50 km of gravel roads. The approximate figures are important here: this is a connection roughly 140 kilometres long, with a gravel section whose length is also only given approximately.

At Remniku, the route reaches the Peipsi Coast and thus a section with sandy beaches. Those choosing accommodation for a stay focused on cycling and nature will therefore find a concrete connection here between the coastal landscape, a longer route and the onward sections towards Narva and Kuremäe.

Swimming spot and local experiences

In 2024, the swimming spot at Remniku Camp was among the swimming spots in Alutaguse Municipality monitored by the Health Board. However, the bathing water quality of this swimming spot could not be assessed and classified in 2024 because the monitoring data did not contain enough samples.

Since 1996, the Remniku Study and Recreation Centre has organised children’s and youth camps during the summer holidays. Archery is also offered there, but exclusively under the supervision of an instructor. This restriction is part of the description of the offering: archery is not presented at the centre as a free, unsupervised activity.

A historical view of Remniku

A map from 1896 recorded 15 households in the village of Remniku. The residents were mainly engaged in fishing, fish processing and forestry; trade was also carried out to a limited extent. This historical insight complements the present-day trail and coastal connections with the village’s former economic character.
