Vaivara

Vaivara combines the landscape of the Sinimäed with an unusually dense succession of historic sites. The Vaivara Landscape Conservation Area includes the Sinimäed, also known as the Blue Hills. This provides a clear choice for planning your trip: you can combine a hiking trail through the Sinimäed with historic sites, or specifically visit individual monuments and memorial sites.

Sinimäed Between Hiking Trails and History

A specific way to engage with the region’s history is the “Time Travel 1944” experience offered by the Vaivara-Sinimäed Museum. After booking in advance, it begins at the museum, providing a fixed starting point for this special form of historical interpretation. If you would like to explore the area in greater depth, the Vaivara History Trail is another option. The circular route leads through the Sinimäed and is up to 8 kilometres long.

The Vaivara History Trail can be walked with a guide after registering in advance through the Sinimäe Museum. This detail distinguishes it from simply visiting an individual monument: a guided format is expressly provided for the trail. In addition, a section of the RMK Penijõe-Aegviidu-Kauksi hiking trail runs through the Sinimäed. This allows you to experience the natural area as part of a longer hiking trail without equating the two trail options.

Memorial Sites in Sinimäe and Vaivara

The site of the Battle of Sinimäe in the Second World War is designated as a historical monument. It extends across the settlement of Sinimäe and the village of Vaivara. In the area around the Sinimäed Battlefield Memorial, an authentic lined section of trench and a cleaned original trench line form a group of monuments. The battlefield memorial itself features a 12-metre-high steel cross with a symbolic composition depicting an explosion.

Another historical focal point is the Vaivara Monument to the Estonian War of Independence in Sinimäe. It commemorates local people who fell in the Estonian War of Independence from 1918 to 1920. If you would like to view Vaivara’s history through more than just the Second World War, this monument adds the memory of an earlier period of Estonian history to your visit.

Old Cemetery and Vaivara Church

The old Vaivara cemetery was established at the end of the 18th century. It was no longer used after the Second World War; more extensive restoration began in 1986. By 2000, a memorial wall had been built there. The stone plaques on this wall commemorate various military units, fallen individual soldiers, recipients of the Cross of Liberty associated with the Vaivara parish, and distinguished people from Vaivara.

The history of the place also includes Vaivara Church, which was built in 1776 and destroyed during the battles of the Second World War. A memorial field was built on the western ridge and slope of Grenaderimägi between 1997 and 2000. It was based on designs by the architect Tiit Kaljundi. The cemetery, memorial wall, church, and memorial field thus each represent different historical layers, making Vaivara a destination for visitors who want to combine nature trails with the region’s culture of remembrance.
