Stege between urban history, harbor and nature trails

Stege combines historic cityscapes with harbor life and a variety of trails. If you are looking for a destination for your Baltic Sea holiday where culture, walks, nature and family-friendly experiences come together, the town offers various options for planning your day.

Medieval traces in the town

Stege Vold is a well-preserved medieval fortification with ramparts and a mill gate. Stege Mølleport adds a special historical perspective: the town gate is one of only two surviving medieval town gates in Denmark. On the Silderuten, you will encounter 30 wrought-iron decorative herrings within Stege’s ramparts, attached to walls, railings and other places.

Museum, merchant’s yard and church

Empiregården is a historic merchant’s yard in Stege and now houses Møns Museum. The museum presents local history, a geological collection and changing exhibitions. Alongside local history and geology, the changing exhibitions introduce additional topics to the museum visit. Its connection with the building dates back to 1958, when Møns Museum officially began using Empiregården.

Stege Church also makes the town’s historical development visible. It features Gothic architecture and frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries. The oldest section dates from the 13th century, is built of brick and designed in the Romanesque style.

Harbor views and trails into nature

At Stege Harbor, you can stroll along the quay, enjoy views across Stege Nor and stop at a café. During the summer months, the old Færgen Møn operates between Stege Harbor and Kalvehave as a floating bicycle connection. The summer months therefore define the time frame for this connection. For cycling days, it can consequently be planned as a seasonal section across the water.

The Stege Skov forest is located close to Stege, directly next to the town. The forest is publicly accessible from Kobbelvej, the extension of Pilevej, as well as from Klintevej. There, the 2.4 km-long health trail “Sjov og leg” offers imaginative play sculptures. For planning the day, the health trail has a fixed length of 2.4 km.

Market season and family experience

The Tirsdagsmarkeder in Stege take place over a period of six weeks. This period sets a clearly limited time frame for market visits in Stege. The Natureventyr route introduced in Stege is an approximately 1 km-long walk for children aged 4 to 9. It combines stories, play and movement with learning about nature and biological diversity. The different trail lengths give you the opportunity to combine cultural city routes, the health trail and the Natureventyr route according to your preferred daily rhythm.
